Official: Craig to step down as White House lawyer

TOKYO — Senior Obama administration officials say White House counsel Greg Craig is announcing his resignation Friday.
Craig's future has been in doubt amid talk that President Barack Obama's promise to close the Guantanamo Bay military prison by January went off track under his leadership.
Craig also oversaw the president's revamping of U.S. policy on terrorism interrogations and detentions.
Veteran Washington lawyer and Obama adviser Bob Bauer is expected to replace Craig as the White House's top attorney.
Craig's planned resignation became public just as Obama landed in Tokyo for a weeklong tour of east Asia.
The senior officials spoke on condition of anonymity because Craig's announcement was not yet formally released.
