Now that they are tied, I am SO nervous about W's excellent debate skills
and his commanding presence. His masterful manner will just force John Kerry to cower. I'm scared.

Aren't you?

39. True - Bush loses on logic/facts/syntax-but wins on body language put downs
Indeed that is his only skill -

But he is good at it.

A real debate and there is no Contest.

But these debates are "Do I want to see this guys face for the next 4 years" - and not real debates about issues.

It is about showing confidence in your own answers, with disdain - good natured of course - for the feeble attempts at answering a question that the other guy is making.

Pure Acting ability. Project sincere concern, smile and be likable, and always be confident your answer is the BEST FOR AMERICA.

And Bush is indeed good at the above con-job.

10. Do NOT underestimate this man!
He has never lost a debate - largely because everyone expects him to fall on his face and, when he manages to stay upright, everyone raves about his outstanding performance.

Let's not lower expectations on him. This is the President of the United States. The least he should be expected to do is be able to debate his opponent.

About managing the expectations game right back at them.

...and Bush bites harder than anyone.

Kerry can wax the floor with him on intellect and policy, but if Bush gets off a few Reaganesque "There you go agains" or "Where's the beefs" or "Fuzzy maths", it won't be as much of a cakewalk as you might expect. If he gets a headline quote the next day, he wins the debate.

Kerry cannot afford to be nuanced at the debates. I want the old prosecutor in him to come out HARD. (His running mate can drill him on regaining those skills. Edwards is brilliant.)

The only thing I'm worried about is the earplug W will be wearing and being fed all the answers from Rove or Cheney. Perhaps if someone can bring a signal scrambler to make sure the earpiece doesn't work, or at the very least, some sort of ultrasonic device to split the boy king's eardrum soo he can't hear the answers, or break the earpiece completely.

51. THe Federal Election Comission and the University of Miami
Edited on Thu Sep-16-04 05:01 PM by Nicholas_J
Are getting pissed, becasue Bush has still not responded to anything being asked of him about the debate formats:

President prodded on debate at UM

Organizers of the first Bush-Kerry debate, planned for Sept. 30 at the University of Miami, are concerned that they haven't heard from Bush, and they say that time is running out.

BY LESLEY CLARK

lclark@herald.com

With the first presidential debate at the University of Miami just two weeks away, debate officials are growing exceedingly anxious about the lack of confirmation from President Bush.

The Commission on Presidential Debates on Wednesday fired off its second letter in as many weeks to the two presidential contenders, warning negotiators for the campaigns that ``final construction and production details must be addressed immediately.''

Three presidential debates have been scheduled -- including the first on Sept. 30 at UM -- but the Bush campaign has yet to sign off on the proposal. Democratic challenger Sen. John Kerry agreed to all three debates in July, as well as a vice presidential debate.

The commission sent a letter last week -- to which it has yet to receive a reply -- that suggested a meeting at the two campaigns' ``earliest convenience.''

http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/news/politics/9674790.htm?1c

Bush is scared of these debates (I mean after all he had to have Cheney come along with him to meet with the 9/11 comission).

He also is dead set against a "TOWN HALL" type of debate where members of the public ask questions off the cuff, rather than having canned questions.

62. Sighing, sounding like he was much smarter than everyone else,
and talking to the majority of Americans like English was their second language. Being condescending isn't a good strategy, and Gore did plenty of that.

George W. Bush kicked Gore's ass because he gave simple answers, even if they were nonsensical and stupid. Presidential debates aren't about substance for 80% of the voting block, it's about who seems to look more comfortable and sounds more pleasing to them.
