Where do the candidates stand on the death penalty?

1. This is a really great subject xrepub, an important issue.

Maybe you could further it along by collecting some info/statements
from the candidate's issues sections on their websites,
(like in the college tuition thread) so that we can discuss it.

3. Dennis and Dean will abolish it.

Kerry would execute terrorists. Under Homeland Security definitions that means us. Mosely-Braun is wish-washy but for a moritorium. Edwards, Clark, Lieberman and Gephardt are opposed to executing innocent people. Dean has no qualms about executing poor, black innocent people - the more the merrier to him. See earlier threads.

Braun proposed a moratorium in Illinois as early as 1984. Also, I'm sure Kerry would refine the Patriot Act.

6. Sorry. THat's Kuicinich and Sharpton will abolish it. Dean has no

qualms about executing innocent people as proven by his statements in his "Meet The Press" interview.

A: I believe that the state has a right to impose the ultimate sanction. But the way the death penalty has been imposed in America is discriminatory. Every existing case on death row should be reevaluated if modern technologies like DNA testing are available to confirm or deny guilt. More broadly, I am concerned that justice today is less than equal, given the vast disparities in sentencing and confinement rates between various groups.

I'd prefer that they all say they'll stop killing people until
they're sure that the criminal justice system no longer targets
blacks and poor folks...
