Can we GD2004 denizens introduce ourselves?
Looking over a thread I started...

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=917853&mesg_id=917853

...I saw a whole slew of names I didn't recognize. We've got a little more than a month to go, and I'd like to meet the people who post in here whom I don't know.

I'll start: My name is Will, I live in Boston, and I write for a website called truthout.org.

73. My name is Tom, I am a raging, card carrying Liberal
Iowan, and I am damn proud of it. I work for a liberal University in a liberal town and spread ultra liberal ideas. Fighting the lies of this POS administration is a full time job. I want to personally thank everyone who does it for us. Give em hell for the majority of "Mericans" who are more like we are than the neocon freaks that have hijacked the republican party. It used to be that you could live with these clowns because you could agree to disagree about phiscal policy. I stare at the middle of the road folks from the way left and I guess we need to step up and rescue America while they watch from the sidelines. The Neocons must be stopped and there is only one way to do it... Elect John Freakin Kerry!

But I post as AngryOldDem. I've been here since about mid-August.

I'm married, have four kids, go to school part-time (working toward new career in social work), and volunteer with many school/church/community activities. I am most active with helping the poor and homeless in my city.

DU certainly is a breath of fresh air.

Nice to meetcha all.

:hi:

EDIT: More detail, which I should have put in the first time around.

I'm a former Labor Union activist and lifetime Democrat. I've been on DU for about a year or so. I don't post very often because of the paranoid climate surrounding critical thinking and strategic planning.

I'm not the type to back away from a heated discussion, but I recognize the audience and many people's overwhelming desire to serve as cheerleaders. I'm cool with that and I have to admit I've learned quite a bit by being a listener...so to speak.

In the end I don't think I have much in common with a lot of people here, but our objectives are the same even if our motives are not.

179. You're in Austin, eh?
Well, I shall have to go to one of the meetings next time they coincide with my being in Austin.

And in introduction, I am Terri, I live in both Austin and Seattle. I am currently in Seattle, last year, I was in Austin. Either way, I visit the other place once a month.

I am a lifelong democrat who never did anything but vote and keep half an eye on politics. Then the weirdness of the 2000 election happened and the even greater weirdness of 9/11 and the consolidation of fascism following rapidly after that. And I watched and I watched and I watched closer yet and I became........radicalized.

I've contributed money this time around, I have agitated greatly and I am now working at the Kerry/Edwards Seattle headquarters. They say Washington is a swing state. I'm so not seeing that. It will be a landslide victory for Kerry. Even if the rest of the state tries to go for Bush, all of Seattle has been radicalized and mobilized, especially for and by the young voters.

111. A Fellow Utahn!
Hi. This is Joan from Cache Valley, Utah. I didn't know there were any DUers in this state! What a joy! Where are you Hamlette? Cache Valley is 98% (or more) Republican. Very lonely, politics-wise, and we've gone to the polls every election for forty years, regardless of how futile it's been. In our little town, I can think of three other Democrats besides me, my husband, and daughter. Two of them might have died. (We're not Mormon, so I know only people belonging to the local arts council which I headed for a couple of years.) If you don't go to the LDS church up here, see, you don't know too many people. However, a lot of people know ME (I write letters to the editor).

I'm waiting for a sign to put up on our hill for Mattheson, our next governor!

16. Hey gang, I'm Robert...
I'm in Southern California, and I do arts fund raising and writing for a major university.

I'm a liberal, yellow-dog Democrat. I supported Dean and Edwards early on, and Kerry has proved to be a first-class candidate and individual. He will make a fine president.

My wife has written for MoveOn.org. We have given more to Democratic candidates and causes this year than ever before.

I am terribly concerned about the abominable condition of our current leadership in this country, and the sad state of the right-wing corporate media. I am totally committed to doing whatever is humanly possible to effect some positive changes in these arenas.

Best to all -- :toast:

I've monitored freerepublic.com daily for eight years, believe the media is the greatest enemy of truth, and am promoting a citizens bill of rights for media/white house transparency at http://webdems.blogspot.com.

29. Hey!
Another artist here - my name's Julie and I live in the Philly burbs. I've always been interested in politics, but never really examined it closely. When I did, I went beyond anti-Bush to frightened for our country. I thought about how this could've happened, right under our noses, and besides the completely bizarre new post 9/11 world distracting us and fear controlling us, I came to the conclusion that alot of Democrats just tuned out after the Florida 2000 thievery. I didn't even watch the news for two years. So many of us WEREN'T PAYING ATTENTION! And many more continue not to - but many, many are. And will be watching and acting and defending truth no matter what the outcome of this election.

Volunteering my a$$ off as well here. I just heard on the radio PA hasn't had these numbers of new voter registration for twenty years.

Honored to be here and meet you all.:grouphug:

I'm doing my damndest to do what I can to get Kerry elected by donating and writing massive amounts of letters to anyone and everyone...Unfortunately due to my job which entails long hours, that's all I can really do at this point...I wish I had the time and resources to do more...

Not the Rambo-First-Blood type, nor the New-England-Foxboro-Stadium kind. More the Francis Marion, Daniel Morgan, Thomas Sumter type. I just recently moved from San Diego, CA to Appleton, WI. Good god, why did I do that? I own a graphic design firm that is nearly 3 years old and is just finally starting to become profitable. Hooray!

I discovered DU about 2 months ago and now I am hooked.

42. Hi, I'm Dan
from Indiana , a yellow dog Democrat from a family of Yellow Dogs!!Never have voted Republican and never will!

My wife (who I converted to our side during the Clinton years)and I have started a Home Health agency, but we are Small Business owners who are NOT Republican!! In fact, I have tried to educate my employees (subtly, of course) on why Kerry would be the best choice for them (OT, Health Insurance), but this IS Indiana and it is tough going! I cannot understand the power of the GOP to get these people to vote against their own self interests!!

Of course, my hot button is hatred of and contempt for * and his incompetence. Also, as I came of age during Vietnam, I never thought we would ever fall into such a quagmire again-UNBELIEVABLE.

I enjoy this (DU) site and spend far too much time here!

It's called "The Grit".

Lots of other great restaurants, too, that aren't exclusively vegetarian. Try "The Last Resort Grill".

Add on edit: if one of the members of R.E.M. is part owner of The Grit, he's awfully low-profile about it. They provide a lot of financial support to alternative endeavors around town, though, so it could be.

Dave (me) is (almost) 51 years old, male, currently living in northern Virginia until someone buys our house - then it's back to New Hampshire!

Career-wise, I used to be in RFID/wireless networking (project manager), but tired of the travel and found it wanting from a self-fulfillment standpoint. I now design/build custom furniture for clients - I'm a one-person design/build team.

I've been married for 29 years to the most fabulous person on this earth, I was at Woodstock, and I like to write. Too much, sometimes.

212. Hey, another furniture maker!
I'm Steve, age 56, and have lived in northeastern Wisconsin nearly all of my life. I always seem to come back when I leave. I must be the winters.

I found my politics in the '60's antiwar movement and over the years have mellowed into a Wisconsin progressive/Kucinch admirer.

Like I said, I build furniture for a living, with help from a part time day job in a woodworking supply store.

If you're in Wisconsin and see a big old white Chevy van with Kerry/Edwards and Feingold posters in the windows and a bumper full of stickers, it's probably me.

I love DU and check in every day, but post sporadically.

I enjoy local history. My driveway is part of the first "state road" from the "western front" (Fort Stanwix Treaty line) to Ithaca, built by General Benjamin Hovey. Hovey was a friend and business partner with Aaron Burr. My house was the first stage coach station on the road west.

137. The treaty line ran from Rome to Unadilla -
So you live somewhere between there? East of Ithaca?

You got me stumped. I didn't know Hovey built any roads, I thought the business deal with Burr was to build a canal, and fell through. Was it before that - when they both lived in Oxford?

ps - I grew up near Ithaca.

153. It ran from Rome to
"Old Unadilla," which is Sidney today. Unadilla was an Iroquois "place name" that included not only the intersection of the Susquehanna and Unadilla Rivers, but a couple miles in each direction. Today, Unadilla sets about 5 miles east of Sidney.

Hovey came to this area from the German Flats area, down what is the approximate state route 51. He was a speculator. There were some French brothers in what is now East Guilford, the Mercereaus, who were decidedly Hamiltonians. They had "bought" miles of the Unadilla and Guilford Creek, preventing any economic competition in mills etc.

The brothers controlled the segment of the Catskill Turnpike (actually a spur) that went through Unadilla, around the area of Brant's Camp and the Oneida village, and through to Guilford. Hovey, who was of the Burr school of thought, got funding from the state capital to build a state road from Rockdale on the Unadilla, through the Ives' Settlement (very Jeffersonian!) and over to Oxford, then on to Ithaca. Guilford was part of Oxford at the time. Hovey was there for a few years, and was a community leader, but the Mercereaus came out on top.

Hovey then went towards Ohio. I believe that he and Burr were involved in some capital ventures that involved an early canal there.

This area was where US Senator Daniel Dickinson grew up. His first job was at a cloth and carding "factory" at the waterfalls a short walk from here. We have fascinating local history. I'm hoping to get over to Ithaca to see if the historical society there has more records on Hovey than does Oxford.

Thanks for taking the time...

Even the little town where I grew up had an extensive historical record at the library - I spent many hours as a teenager poring over old maps and newspaper clippings.

And even though I've now spent more years out west than back east, in my heart upstate New York is still my home.

Unfortunately, my dear husband is a republican as are both of my voting age daughters. Despite our political differences, we are close knit and get along fine (as long as politics are not the main discussion).

I have been lurking here for a couple of years and recently began posting. I am hopeful that John Kerry will be called "Mr. President" come January.

123. Hi there--
My name is Gina, and I'm a 41 year old mother of two young children. I also teach history to 7th graders in a public school here in San Antonio.

I've been a Democrat since I was 13 years old. Four years ago I was a stay-at-home mom who got caught off guard by the last few months of the 2000 campaign and the selection. I've protested Bush in Washington DC and in Austin since then and dedicated much of my life to seeing that he returns to Crawford in January.
I'm so looking forward to the end of these four long years.

I picked up my Kerry/Edwards yard sign today, and it's standing proudly in the front yard of our home in our small, predominantly Republican, Texas neighborhood. We outnumber Bush/Cheney signs 4-3 right now!

Cheers!:toast:

(not my real name) and I'm a 33 year old suburban Dallas mom and teacher. People expect me to be conservative and Republican because I am white, Christian, Texan (WAY back Texan, not a damn carpetbagger), an Aggie, a veteran's wife, suburban, soccer mom, not poor or minority etc.

I am a flaming liberal, always have been, always will be. I am the GOP's worst nightmare. I look very conventional and am professional, educated and well-spoken and love hanging out with just about anyone (except freepers and snotty people, can't stand them).

I have made it my mission in life, not just in this election, to see the Republicans so out of power as to cripple them. I believe whole-heartedly in the goals and ideals of the Democratic party of the United States of America and if anyone has a problem with that in my real life, they know where they can shove it.

I stand up, speak up and I don't take shit off of any damn Republican. I call them on their lies and their greed and their bigotry. I fight them with all I have.

I'll go to my grave doing it, too.

136. Hi! I'm Robert, and a former Republican.
I'm 68 now, retired, and live in Fort Myers, Florida. I am the care giver for my 90-year-old mother, who has been an Alzheimer's patient for the past seven years. Because of this I am unable to get out much. I found DU about three months ago, and I spend a lot of time reading the interesting posts and occasionally contributing some of my own comments.

I was a liberal Republican, Eisenhower and Nelson Rockefeller were the guys I liked. I am fiscally conservative, but I do believe in providing basic services for people, such as universal healthcare, Social Security, unemployment and welfare benefits. I HATE what the Republican party has become now. HUGE deficits, tax cuts for the RICH, nothing but lip-service for caring for the less fortunate. Even worse, we now have a dummy who has taken us into an unnecessary war in Iraq!

I'm a registered Democrat now, and proud of it. I voted for Gore in 2000, and I was outraged when the Supreme Court stole the election for Bush! I joined the ACLU, and I have become a radical in my old age. I love John Kerry, and believe that he will be an excellent president.

This thread is an excellent idea. I am pleased to meet you all, my fellow Democrats. We have a really "big tent" don't we? Such a diversity of backgrounds here! One thing we all have in common: we are smart enough to see how incompetent Bush is, and support Kerry!

-- been here just a few weeks.

Am Christian, and very "conservative" in how I live my life but very liberal in my view of what the government's job is. Considering replacing all of my campaign bumper stickers, after Nov 2, with one I saw on the 'net proclaiming, "Another Proud Member of the Christian Left."

Love love love Texas democrats. It takes spit, vinegar, a titanium spine, and a large sense of humor just to survive. Like Crispini, I've always voted but am really ACTIVE in campaigns for the first time ever this year.

I live in ye old New Jersey, I'm in my late twenties, and have a youngun who just started der Kindergarten. I don't know what I do for a living these days, because no one has hired me yet ;-) but I'm easy to get along with and not even a bit conservative, except for when I'm very prudish.

I spend entirely too much time on this 'puter. It was she who encouraged me to join DU.

My name is Carolyn; "Kukesa" is what my sweet old Russian grandmother used to call me -- it means "little cookie" (roughly translated).

I've always been a liberal and suffered through the dark ages when VolcanoJen THOUGHT she was a Repuke. Kittens usually open their eyes when they mature.

I currently co-chair two Dem committees (visibility and phone bank recruitment) and am in charge of volunteer meetings at our HQ.

I was able to live the American dream: go to college, get a job, work hard, save money, retire and enjoy life; I sail, scuba dive, snow ski, read Civil War books and tend my garden. It saddens me to think that dream may not come true for my children and grandchildren.

My thanks to all of you on DU -- you've restored my faith and after this election, I will pass the torch into your capable hands.

I was raised in Oregon in a family of FDR Democrats who were farmers, mill workers, and union supporters. I will never live anywhere else.

My dad and his uncle were decorated WW II veterans.

I got involved in politics when I met Robert Kennedy in my little home town at age 13. I spent time after school handing out buttons, bumper stickers and campaign literature for my political hero, Senator Wayne Morse.

I think John Kerry is one of the most exciting Democratic presidential prospects in a very long time.

I lost my middle-class job 20 months ago, and only just now am working again, at 40% of my former salary.

I'm an operative at the Continental Detective Agency, currently on assignment in the town of Poisonville.

As a cover though I pretend to be a graphic designer from Los Angeles. I come from a family of Democrats (and further left) on all sides. Grew up in the Reagan/Bush doldrums of the '80s wondering why we bothered to be Democrats when our guys never won :) Then I got complacent during my high-school/college Clinton years and drifted further left to the point of being a disillusioned non-voter in 2000.

Now I'm firmly back in the fold, proud to be a Democrat and looking forward to the future of the party. I have a newborn baby daughter who I hope to raise with the same progressive values my parents and grandparents demonstrated to me.

186. Met DUers at Clerys
Hi -
I'm Joan from Boston. I don't post much but I like to read this site. Thank you SO much!

I met some of you DUers and friends at Clerys during the DNC.

I have been doing recent battles with neocons over the political issues on a "hobby" list I won't name. Dealing with lots of rhetoric and disruption towards censorship. Including at least one person (a leader respected in that particular "hobby" community) who said Robert Redford and all the environmentalists are all just speaking rhetoric, not above polemics and just out to "Get Bush." When I cited the League of Conservation Voters big F scorecard on the Bush/Cheney environmental record (as well as the survey in recent WP editorial), I was told that I was providing "arguments from authority" which are "logically fallacious." I fired back that I would remember that the next time the Pentagon speaks.

Actually this was all on a thread about how the Bush/neocons treat people who express disagreement or dissent with extreme arrogance and dismissal: what's going on at the Bush campaign events with dissenters and trespassing charges, disregard for our (former?) allies, the strong arming and bullying and the censorship (just read how EPA officials cannot NOW talk to press) The WH had told Redford he should just stick to making movies. That whole "shut up and sing" posturing. The neocon guy insisted there was NO BULLYING at any time by the * Admin.

In any case, I later sent the Garrison Keillor recent piece - poo poo pee doo on them (and it was labeled as "inflammatory" by one same neocon opponent.) But basically they were trying to bait me into getting personal so that people would complain that list was getting out of control and stop political threads, thus censorship to be achieved. It didn't work - the list moderator is gracious and fair, but it had an effect of at least dampening political threads for the time being.

That's just to give you a bit of background of what I've been up to. Ever since Abu Ghraib scandal hit, I've become much more politically motivated. I am in fear (such as that expressed by Sy Hersh on Daily Show) of what's going on with this nation. Also doing volunteer work for the Kerry campaign.

Thank you All for your good work and support.

I live in the North Maine Woods, about an hour's drive north of Bangor, Maine. I'm a retired system's analyst, retired by reason of mill closure and lack of high-tech in this part of the state. My wife and I live on a parcel of land with fields, orchards, woods and a view (esp this time of the year) of a lake and woods that some folks from the city would "kill for". (Wish I knew how to post a pic here, it's a fantastically colorful day here today.)

I've been involved in Dem politics off and on since the early 60's. Ran for office myself and have been elected to local government several times.

PS: Will, love your writing, but man, you really need to include sentences that have "shorter" words, with 3 MBA between us, sometimes my wife and I get lost in the verbiage.:D

My name is Penny. I'm retired and my husband is also retired.

I love DU.. and am currently spending 2 days a week inputting data at the Clay County Democratic Headquarters.

My husband and I have 15 grandchildren between us and we want to see Bush disappear off into the Crawford sunset.

238. I'm Kevin. I live in Manhattan and I am a digital photo retoucher. I cast
my first Presidential vote in 1976 for Eugene McCarthy, voted for Jesse Jackson in the 80's, and voted for a Dem Presidential candidate for the first time in 1992 (I actually didn't cast the vote--my two-year-old son did). I voted for Clinton again in 1996 and then for Al Gore in 2000. I officially switched from Independent to the Democratic Party last fall because of Howard Dean, who has since convinced me to remain a Democrat. Despite the immense challenges we face, I have high hopes for November 2 and the subsequent Kerry administration.
