the dc debate with braun, kucinich, and sharpton ?

i'm watching a repeat of the dc debate with braun, sharpton, and kucinich. i know the other candidates are not running in the primary there and that's why they didn't attend. but why do they have a place set aside for howard dean ? they also asked him a question when he wasn't even there which got people to laugh.

but the DNC asked the candidates not to participate in non-binding votes for some reason. Only Dean, Kucinich, Sharpton, and Braun snubbed the DNC over that request. Dean not showing up to the debate is regretable but understandable.

Now I wonder if the DC residents who are rightfully screaming to be fully represented and given Statehood would agree with that statement. Maybe they would but can you explain why he missed it for my own curiosity?

Honestly I was kind of surprised by his skipping it and I didn't hear any reason given.

You have to admit that there's less at stake for Kucinich, Sharpton, and Mosley-Braun in turning their attention from Iowa. In the meantime, Dean is being attacked by the Club for Growth in Iowa while he battles Gephardt for first place. Being put on the ballot in DC is largely a symbolic gesture, giving support to District residents' quest for statehood (over the objections of the party leadership) despite the lack of political primary motivation to do so. Indeed, those who pushed for changing the date of the nonbinding DC primary to the first in the nation acknowledged that it was largely a symbolic gesture to call attention to the fight for statehood.

So I'd say that "regrettable but understandable" is a fairly accurate description.

for anyone who has any idea, why in the world is the Dem party fighting DC's Statehood request?? I'd have thought certainly the Democratic Party would support Statehood for DC.

It was a good debate. Also there was great debate a couple days ago with just Lieberman, Edwards and Kucinich, which was also very refreshing. Maybe Gephardt, Kerry, Dean and Clark should just drop out already so we can get more meaningful debates.

21. I'm hoping this is what we have to look forward to...

once the field clears out a little bit. Nine candidates on stage reduces everything to overly simplistic soundbite speeches rather than honest discussion of complex issues. No wonder most Americans don't know anything about the Dem candidates.

of these debates? These were some of the poorest debates as far as fairness and time to talk without a bell ,buzzer or talking head saying "time's up".

Nine is a lot but I think there could have been a much better job done of things. How many debates has it taken for Dennis to even get a shot at speaking?

There have been some better than others...

Koppel was the absolute worst but at least Dennis got to make a point of the shallowness and unfairness of it.

I have the video of DK laying the smackdown on Koppel. The look on Koppel's face is great.

And guess what? The people agreed with Kucinich! Then the next day DU was full of poll and money posts again, oh well! :)
