Nice Debate Piece By William Buckley At National Review...
Say what you want about the man but he's not a fool...

I have seen Buckley in many debates.... He knows an indefensible performance when he sees one...

Bush sucked....

Also a nice piece from Jay Nordlinger....

4. Buckley Has Been Ambivalent About The Iraq Invasion
while most of the National Review staff has been solidly in Bush and the neocon's camp...

Don't agree with him often (if ever), but at least he's intellectually honest and not a sheep.

5. He's A Great Advocate For His Views...
And he's willing to reexamine his beliefs in light of new evidence....

If anything he's a Burkean conservative of which not too many are around...

6. I probably wouldnt agree with Burke on much
but if I recall, he did promote tolerance of Catholics in Ireland, didnt like what happened in India, and I truly believe in "The only way evil triumphs is when good men do nothing."

8. When I Was In College I Didn't Like Burke...
I was more moved by Rousseau and Marx though I was never a Marxist or aspired to be one...

I now realize Edmund Burke was a wise man... He was a small c conservative who advocated respect for tradition but was not opposed to change that was the product of well thought out reasoning...

He supported the American Revolution while opposing the French Revolution which was known for it's excesses.....

12. The problem with the french revolution I think was that
Robespierre and the Jacobins became exactly what they had rebelled against, tyrants. Plenty of old time conservatives who one can respect, I didnt know Burke supported our revolution though. I don't mind some tradition.

14. When We Were In College In The Early Eighties
we used to discuss whether or not Burke would have supported the contras...

As far as the French Revolution they wanted to "change time"... That was a bit scary...

7. I watched Buckly debate some college students..
on drug legalization over a decade.

They beat him pretty handily. It was interesting in that even though he essentially agreed with them (they were arguing in favor of legalization), he just couldn't quite bring himself to admit he agreed with them.

10. He's In Favor Of Legalization Now As Is Milton Friedman and George Schultz
I saw Buckley debate Charlie Rangel with Charlie Rangel taking the anti-legaliztion position..

Charlie Rangel sees the effects of drugs on some of his constituents.....

I favor a third way....

Decriminilazation of drugs with mandatory drug treatment for offenders...

I would almost put pot in a category of it's own because it's relatively benign when used responsibly....

Kind of like alchohol....

17. I'm with you on decriminalization.
I was very young when I watched that debate, but I found it fascinating because Buckley was agreeing with them, yet not admitting to agreeing with them. I guess because they were libertarians or maybe liberals with NORML and he just couldn't be labeled one of them.

I guess it awoken me to politics trumping idealism, in a way. I was just a kid, but it was memorable.
