I apologize for my anger. I just can not express how angry I am at some people.
I have been watching the BBCAmerica news, and I usually find it very good. They give a strong, independent voice of reason which doesn't pander to the American right. In fact, they are often highly critical of the Bush administration, and with good, solid reason.
Tonight, they were talking about the debate, and saying that "both camps" think they won the debate. However, they were talking to the "common man and woman on the street" and asking them what they thought of the debate. They spoke with three people in the segment I watched--two women and one man. One of the women said she thought Kerry did better than Bush, but she is still going to vote for Bush. They cut off her reply, so I didn't hear the whole thing, but it seemed she apparently approved more of his choices. The guy also said Kerry did better, but he "trusted" Bush to pull us through the war with Iraq and against terrorism.
What can I say? Is it me? Or am I right, that people like this are too stupid, probably too wrapped up in their own lives to give a shit about how the world views us, and how many of feel of the last four godawful years--a continual nightmare that never seems to come to an end?
I feel very bitter because it is people like this who will go to the voting booths on 11/2, and will condemn our country to another possible four years of this illegal regime that is taking away our civil rights, that is condemning many, many young people to death, that is slowly but inexorably crushing democracy, and which is ruining the world for the next generation through its violations of environmental, clean air and other conservation laws. I look at my 9 year old great nephew, and how smart he is, and how the world he inherits will more closely resemble the world of Blade Runner or Soylent Green than the world of Star Trek in its pessimism. How breathing fresh air, getting a sun tan without overexposure to UV rays and other nasties, and trying to live without exposure to radioactive waste will be impossible to visualize.
How you're either rich or poor, and how that will affect the way you interact with the world, whether you are educated or used as human cannon fodder for whatever purpose the aristocracy wants to use you for.
Perhaps it won't ever be that bad, perhaps I'm an alarmist, and my imagination likes to create the worst-case scenarios, but we can see huge parts of our freedom already being snatched away, and our lives made less meaningful because of the emphasis on business rights, instead of human rights. There comes a time when our moral values must say "NO!" and mean it--when we must stand up and rebel against the powers that try their damnedest to enslave us all through their never-ending stomp on our liberties and freedoms.
As a liberal, I shake my head at these idiots, these dingbats who choose to be uninformed, and who will vote for Bush out of complete ignorance or selfishness. However, as a liberal, I will defend to the death their right to choose to be imbeciles, because that's ultimately the right thing to do.
