Best beach in AL and why.
I know you guys have a little sliver of beach down there. We are thinking of going to Pensicola but wonder what else might be down that way.

1. The best beach in Alabama is in Florida
They don't call it the Redneck Riviera for nothing!

2. Consider the Destin and Fort Walton FL. area. The beach is white quartz

and frequently rated the most beautiful white quartz beach in the world.

Just avoid the Florida panhandle beaches during spring break.

3. The beaches...
...in Mobile and Baldwin Counties are as white as the ones in Florida, but the water is a lot muddier.

And the people, well...let's just say it would be worth your while to head to Florida.

4. Alabama Is Nice... But Florida Is Better
Go to Destin/Fort Walton Beach just east of Pensacola. It is MUCH better than Pensacola and Panama City.

And if you have to go to an AL beach... try Orange Beach south of Mobile. It's a beautiful place.

8. Pensacola is still recovering from the hurricane
I definitely would not go there at this time.

Destin is probably the best for both sand and water.

5. I really like Orange Beach
And the people are nice to me. And I've never noticed the water being "muddy." Don't know what it's like down there right now; I haven't been since the big hurricane.

6. There's a lot of silt...
...that moves through Mobile Bay from the Tombigbee and Alabama river systems. So much so that the water in Gulf Shores still bears a good deal of it.

Orange Beach is far enough from the bay that on good days (and that changes according to conditions such as wind and amounts of rainfall upstate), the water can be clearer.

On the average, though, I've never seen the water on our beaches as clear as the water in the Florida Panhandle. They just don't have any spots comparable to Mobile Bay. The biggest bay in the panhandle is probably Escambia Bay and it doesn't have nearly the same amount of riverwater emptying into it.

7. gotcha
Some of the best days of my life have been down there, in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and yes, Pensacola. Heard any updates on the Florabama? I hope they get opened up sooner or later.

9. Flora-Bama
Edited on Wed Mar-02-05 02:05 PM by Arwennick
I talked to Joe Gilchrist Sunday at the memorial for Rusty McHugh. He got his building permits Monday. He hopes to be open by July.

The best beach on the coast is 3 miles east of the Fla-Ala line. Its public and its called Johnson Beach. The waters always clear and it is little used because the tourist don't know of its existence.

ps:the Mullet Toss is on,they will serve out of Ice Chest.

BTW;There were 600+ at the memorial for Rusty McHugh who died of cancer last week.Joe gave away beer and liquor for the first two hours.Rusty was a singer/songwriter at the Flora-Bama for the last 10-11 years. He wrote some great songs like.........

"What the Fuck was I thinking when I said I Do"
"Wild Ass Women"
"I get all my Women at the Waffle House"
"I Always Get Battered When She Gets Fried"

RIP Rusty

10. thanks for the info
Sorry to hear about Rusty. Astoundingly I never saw him perform, but I read a nice article about him a few years ago in the Tuscaloosa News. Sounded like a great, crazy guy. I had no idea he was sick. Sad to hear it.

And somehow, I'm not familiar with Johnson Beach. I'll check it out next time I'm down that way -- hopefully it won't be too long.
