WASHINGTON -- The Senate Judiciary Committee again delayed a vote Thursday on Mobile native Bill Pryor's nomination for a federal appellate judgeship, but Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., promised to make it the "number one item" at the panel's next business session, probably May 12.
Specter deferred action on Pryor's nomination in favor of plowing ahead with committee consideration of a weighty and controversial measure creating a $140 billion trust fund to handle claims from people who say they've suffered because of asbestos exposure.
After U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Mobile, urged immediate action on Pryor's candidacy, Specter responded that he was "certain" that the postponement would not hurt his chances. A vote planned for last week was delayed in a routine gesture for any contentious nomination. Because Republicans control the committee 10-8, Pryor is virtually certain of winning approval.
