Siegelman still says election was pilfered

Siegelman still says election was pilfered

Ex-governor using professor's report to back up his claim

By Dana Beyerle
Montgomery Bureau

MONTGOMERY -- Former Gov. Don Siegelman still believes the 2002 governor's race was stolen from him by someone who manipulated a Baldwin County vote-count computer.

He's using an Auburn University professor's report to back him up.

"Oh yeah, I believe it. Absolutely,'' Siegelman said last week. "There's no way for a computer to get different results.''

On Nov. 5, 2002, Baldwin County election officials, based on a vote tally at 11:04 p.m., initially reported that Siegelman got 19,070 votes in the county, while challenger Bob Riley got 31,052.

"The manipulation that I suspect took place, I'm pretty certain took place in the tallying machine,'' Gundlach said. "After everybody left, except a handful of Republican officials, they ran another set and pulled the second set back and ran a third set. (The third set) were the final certified results, which gave Riley the election.''

1. More:

Gundlach, a demographic and statistical expert, said he votes Democratic and voted for Siegelman.

Gundlach said in his study that the Riley votes in Baldwin County were much more deviated from what should have occurred, based on a statistical analysis of statewide voting.

He theorized that someone manipulated one in five votes in each precinct and tried to add them to Riley's total. But somehow the results were added to Siegelman's total. When the mistake was discovered, Gundlach said the mistake was undone.

Gundlach said a statistical analysis showed Siegelman should have received 15,283 votes and Riley 27,866, enough for Siegelman to win statewide by about 2,500 votes.

"Anyone with access to the tabulating machines and (who) has the ability to run access data code could have done it when no one else is watching,'' Gundlach said. "There were three Republican officials alone with the machine after the first results were released. Or they were the ones doing it.''

2. Hey Melissa**you may want to simplify that thread title
pilfered* - i know my share of words, but I don't even know what pilfered means :)

I liked the original title you had. Southern Dem speaks out on election fraud? or something like that.

7. Pilfered
It's what I like to call a "southernism" more or less means stolen.

But that's kind of country hick type examples...the kind I learned in my lifetime anyways.

The true definition is probably different I am sure but that's how I know it best...call me hick hehe.

3. you beat me to it
I was just going to post this story.

That was a weird night. I watched Siegelman give his victory speech late that night. Then I got up on Wednesday morning and I heard that Riley won. :wow:

4. The election was stolen from Siegelman and it's a disgrace that
the Alabama Democratic Party did not back him. :grr:
