GOP Survey Favors Riley (Thank you God!)
Edited on Mon Aug-01-05 04:00 AM by Syrinx
(But this is only Republican leaders. Let's pray the GOP voters think this way too!)
Gov. Bob Riley is the clear choice among Republican leaders for re-election over former Chief Justice Roy Moore, a Birmingham News survey shows.

Seventy-two percent of 160 Republican Executive Committee members who responded supported Riley; 21 percent supported Moore. The remainder either were undecided or said a Riley-Moore matchup would amount to no choice at all.

*snip*

Of the 115 members who said they supported Riley, nearly half praised the governor while criticizing Moore, or they focused solely on why Moore should not be governor. To his supporters, Riley's assets include running a scandal-free administration, giving the state a good image and doing well with industrial recruitment, being a good steward of tax dollars or doing his best despite a Legislature controlled by Democrats and responsive to the Alabama Education Association.

The criticisms of Moore targeted the former chief justice's removal from office in 2003 after refusing to obey a federal court order to remove a Ten Commandments monument he had placed in the state judicial building. Some called him an extremist who would waste time fighting for his issue instead of addressing more pressing state problems, and one even vowed to leave the state if Moore were elected governor.

Left out the link; I'm a dumbass:

1. Bubble Busting
Edited on Sun Aug-07-05 02:10 PM by taleast
Hate to bust your bubble, but I seriously doubt this means a whole lot except that Riley has the support of the GOP establishment. I think "Joe Blow" will still vote for Moore over Riley in a GOP primary, although I must say that Riley is gaining momentum over Moore as time goes along, so maybe Moore will lose in June and that terrible phase of Alabama politics will be over. What us Democrats need to be concentrating on is convincing Don to stay at home, and get there soon. I encourage all Democrats to not vote in the GOP primary if Don is on the ballot, we need a candidate that can win and that candidate is not good 'ol Don. Don't get me wrong, he is a nice fellow, I have met him at a couple of events (Jefferson-Jackson dinner, etc..), but we don't need him running for governor.

2. Can't you keep that idiot Moore in AL??
Good thing I wasn't in charge of that monument situation. My solution was to haul the false idol out to an empty field, strap Moore on it along with some dynamite. End of problem. He is coming to the large city near me (IL) to spew his billous BS.
I take is Barkley isn't running for Gov (been a while since I checked out your state forum).

4. yes
About that being a survey of the executive committee. I would think that "average Repugs" would be of the same mind. But the hardcore fundamentalists are the ones guaranteed to vote on election day. That's why I'm urging all my Democratic and rational Republican friends to vote for Riley on primary day. I will still support Lucy or Don in the general election, but it's important to "nip it in the bud" when speaking of a potential Moore administration. Nip It In The Bud!

Tell you the truth, I'd prefer Otis to let himself into the Governor's Mansion, than ol' Roy.
