How is Mobile holding up?

We haven't heard anything about Mobile in almost 2 weeks.

How bad was the damage? Is the city fully functional yet?

I do think that Bob Riley seems to be conducting himself with a lot more class than Haley Barbour. But correct me if I'm wrong.

1. We drove to Mobile to get hot meals and supplies

When I was in Gulfport last week, I took my parents to Mobile twice to eat at a restaurant and pick up supplies. We got gas with no trouble, and almost everything seemed to be open regular hours. This was on Thursday, and it was in the northwest part of the city, around Schillinger and Airport.

We drove in along Airport from Hurley, Mississippi the first time, and saw some wind damage, and some stores that had just re-opened, but that was before we got to the city. The second time we drove in along I-10. I didn't see any damage. I didn't go into downtown, or south of it, but I drove along Airport a good ways, and everything seemed like a normal city.

Dauphin Island and Bayou Labatrie were flooded during the storm, and Mobile flooded from the river (the water never topped the levees on the Bay). I know the tunnel was closed at first, and I never heard whether it was reopened. But at least the north part of the city seemed functional and not heavily damaged.

2. The city itself...

...didn't take too much damage, certainly no worse than with Ivan. Everything is back to normal now and has been for a close to a week.

Bayou La Batre did indeed take a hard hit as did some communities down the southwestern side of Mobile Bay. The fishing industry in Bayou La Batre is likely done for as they were on their last legs before this. Developer Tim James, son of the former governor, is leading a huge effort to turn the whole Bayou area into resort condos and it looks like he will get his wish now.

There was a some flooding downtown but nothing too extensive. We experienced an 8-10 foot storm surge. There are no levees on Mobile Bay.

Both tunnels were reopened within a couple of days.

3. Actual Mobile is back to normal, some minor damage still...

gulf shores is still somewhat messed up though.
I was ther about a week and a half ago.
