Roy Moore Watch

Out-of-state donors generous to Roy Moore

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — More than 60 percent of the contributions that Roy Moore received in his Republican race for governor came from out of state.

An analysis by The Birmingham News of campaign contributions recently reported by the four major candidates for governor show Moore with 61 percent from out of state, followed by Democratic Lt. Gov. Lucy Baxley at 6 percent, former Democratic Gov. Don Siegelman at 4 percent, and Republican incumbent Bob Riley at 2 percent.

Roy Moore Calls For Removal Of GOP Chief

MONTGOMERY -- Former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore on Tuesday accused Republican Party Chairwoman Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh of favoring Gov. Bob Riley in June's GOP gubernatorial primary, and he demanded that she step down temporarily.

"We knew when she took this job there would be problems," Moore said, noting that Cavanaugh moved from Riley's administration to her party job. "She simply should not be in a position to promote her former boss. ... So we're asking her to step aside. That way she would be free to do what she obviously wants to do."

In a written response to Moore's morning statements, Cavanaugh cited her support for Moore's 2000 campaign for chief justice, expressed disappointment with his request, and said she has no intention of departing.

"I was elected by 377 grass-roots Republicans who sit on the state executive committee from all 67 counties, and I serve at their pleasure," she wrote. "I cannot abandon the trust and responsibility they have placed in me by stepping aside as party chairman."

Moore Calls on President Bush to Defend Religious Freedom of Military Chaplains

MONTGOMERY, Alabama, Feb. 16 /Christian Wire Service/ -- Judge Roy Moore, former Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, Vietnam Veteran, and Chairman of the Foundation for Moral Law, sent a letter to President George Bush today urging our Commander-in-Chief to protect the right of military chaplains to pray in the name of Jesus.

In his letter, Judge Moore told the President that he is “greatly disturbed by reports that chaplains of the United States are being refused the right to pray according to the dictates of their conscience” and “have been told that they cannot pray in the name of Jesus Christ.” Judge Moore reminded the President that he has the constitutional authority and duty to protect the religious freedom of chaplains:

“At a time when the ACLU and other organizations dedicated to the removal of the knowledge of God from our land have joined forces with liberal federal court judges to interfere with our God-given inalienable right to worship according to the dictates of our conscience, it is the duty of the President of the United States to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

Riley leads big over Moore, poll shows

MOBILE -- Gov. Bob Riley has widened his lead over former Chief Justice Roy Moore in a poll of Alabamians likely to vote in the Republican primary for governor.

The Mobile Register-University of South Alabama survey of likely Republican voters showed Riley with 56 percent to Moore's 28 percent, with 16 percent undecided.

Riley's standing was up from a similar Mobile Register-USA poll in October that showed Riley with 44 percent, Moore with 25 percent, and 31 percent undecided.

*snip*

Moore downplayed the survey's results and expressed confidence in how he will perform in the Republican primary on June 6.

1. Thanks, Syrinx!
I'm wondering why so many from out of state are donating to this loon, and it's good to know that Riley has a healthy lead.

Moore isn't taking PAC money, so he has to make up the difference somewhere. And that "somewhere" is made up of bands of religious fanatics from coast to shining coast.

By the way, if I recall correctly, Artur Davis got most of his money from out of state as well, and he turned out to be a breath of fresh air in these parts. Not that I believe Moore would be "fresh," obviously. ;)

EDIT: I see that Maryland is the only state from which Moore has not received donations. Isn't that where George Wallace was shot? Hmmm....

3. "Independent" Moore?
It might be to his advantage not to run as a Republican.

Some Alabama Republicans believe former state Chief Justice Roy Moore will ditch his primary challenge of Gov. Bob Riley and run instead as an independent. Moore says that's not so, that he's a dedicated Republican and that he'll stay in the race in that capacity.

In the absence of evidence to the contrary, people ought to take Moore at his word. Even so, speculation always plays a big role in the political game, and there are reasons it might be in Moore's interest to do exactly what he says he won't do.

Recent polls show Moore trailing Riley by 56 to 28 percent, a margin of 2 to 1. Riley has campaign money, a booming state economy, even a budget surplus - something unheard of in Alabama. (Moore has money too, but much of it comes from out of state, which means those donors can't vote for Moore.)

9. I would love to see Moore run as an independent
That would split the repug voters and assure us a Democrat Governor.

10. What do you think of the Libertarian candidate?
Edited on Wed Apr-26-06 12:56 AM by Syrinx
I love parts of her platform, like ending the War On Drugs. However, she also seems to want to dismantle public education.

"Just Say Nall to Republicans and Democrats"

"Just Say Nall to a Government Controlled Education System"

"Just Say Nall to the Drug War"

"Just Say Nall To the Patriot and Real ID Acts"

"Just Say Nall to the Iraq War"

"Just Say Nall to High Gas Prices"

"Just Say Nall To Unfair Ballot Access Laws"

4. Moore calls on Riley to denounce ports pact
I'm a little late on seeing this one. And what's scary is I agree with Moore here.
MONTGOMERY (AP) — Former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore says Gov. Bob Riley should speak out against a Bush administration deal that would allow a United Arab Emirates-based company to take over significant operations at several U.S. ports.

"It is absolutely imperative that the governor publicly denounce this transaction and call upon President George W. Bush to stop this foolish breach of security of our nation's ports," Moore said Tuesday.

6. wow, that's gripping stuff they have!
I'm glad his campaign isn't the juggernaut part of me feared. I'm still worried about the redneck turnout though.
