MONTGOMERY -- Former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore on Tuesday accused Republican Party Chairwoman Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh of favoring Gov. Bob Riley in June's GOP gubernatorial primary, and he demanded that she step down temporarily.
"We knew when she took this job there would be problems," Moore said, noting that Cavanaugh moved from Riley's administration to her party job. "She simply should not be in a position to promote her former boss. ... So we're asking her to step aside. That way she would be free to do what she obviously wants to do."
In a written response to Moore's morning statements, Cavanaugh cited her support for Moore's 2000 campaign for chief justice, expressed disappointment with his request, and said she has no intention of departing.
"I was elected by 377 grass-roots Republicans who sit on the state executive committee from all 67 counties, and I serve at their pleasure," she wrote. "I cannot abandon the trust and responsibility they have placed in me by stepping aside as party chairman." http://www.al.com/news/mobileregister/index.ssf?/base/news/1139999035207330.xml&coll=3Moore Calls on President Bush to Defend Religious Freedom of Military Chaplains
MONTGOMERY, Alabama, Feb. 16 /Christian Wire Service/ -- Judge Roy Moore, former Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, Vietnam Veteran, and Chairman of the Foundation for Moral Law, sent a letter to President George Bush today urging our Commander-in-Chief to protect the right of military chaplains to pray in the name of Jesus.
In his letter, Judge Moore told the President that he is “greatly disturbed by reports that chaplains of the United States are being refused the right to pray according to the dictates of their conscience” and “have been told that they cannot pray in the name of Jesus Christ.” Judge Moore reminded the President that he has the constitutional authority and duty to protect the religious freedom of chaplains:
“At a time when the ACLU and other organizations dedicated to the removal of the knowledge of God from our land have joined forces with liberal federal court judges to interfere with our God-given inalienable right to worship according to the dictates of our conscience, it is the duty of the President of the United States to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."http://www.earnedmedia.org/cdc0216.htmRiley leads big over Moore, poll shows
