As a little-known cabinetmaker and political rookie from Vestavia, Hilbun Adams says God told him to run for lieutenant governor of Alabama.
Adams, 53, is one of four Republicans seeking his party's nomination. His name is still obscure. An Associated Press article said a moderator introduced him as "Hilton" Adams recently at a state Republican Executive Committee meeting.
Adams, who has an eye disease that is affecting his carpentry profession, himself isn't even sure who his supporters are. He joked that his sister is a Democrat and she said she wouldn't vote for him. He's running on a shoestring budget that he said is less than $5,000. He paid $900 to qualify.
Adams said he didn't have a "burning bush experience" when he received his instructions, but he believes God will help him win. He knows that opponent George Wallace Jr. has the name recognition and opponent attorney/lobbyist Luther Strange has the money. He took a shot at Wallace, saying the name of Wallace's deceased father, Gov. George C. Wallace, could only take him so far.
