Hurricane Ivan follow up....everyone survive in one piece??
I know we have several Alabama DU'ers from Baldwin County and other locations in the south and central parts of our state. Is everyone ok?

We just got our power back on here in my part of Lee County, and I'm trying to catch up on all the news!

Hope everyone is alive and kicking. I'd like to hear about your experiences, if you have time to post.

1. I'm in West Blocton--Central Alabama,,,
Southeast of B'ham, Southwest of Tuscaloosa. Never lost power, but it rained like hell for the better part of 12 hours. A few trees upended, but otherwise okay. I think the damage was far worse for those on the east side of Ivan. Glad you're okay.

9. I have a friend in West Blockton.
I don't have enough post to email you, so email me and see if you know him or his wife. He's a freaking Repub. but a nice enough guy.

2. You beat me to this thread subject
I had just started a "check in" thread when my power went out. I went to the shelter in the Coliseum for my volunteer shift, and when I got back the cable was down until this afternoon. We're fine, and the cats are finally happy again since they were able to go outside.

Anyone heard from trof?

3. T-Town here
We are all okay. Some parts of town are without power and will be for a while. Including our HQ (but also the rethug HQ which is right next door). We open anyway, we can still give out stickers and other swag

4. My folks live in Foley (that's just 15 miles from Gulf Shores)
They got out but have heard (from a neighbor that stayed) that their house "looks" okay from the outside, but trees are down everywhere. They weren't able to board up, so I bet they do have damage, but my Mom is so stressed about "everything being ruined"; they didn't take much with them.

I think loss of life could have been much worse, but most folks heeded the warnings and got out in time.

The pictures from Gulf Shores are saddening, but at least there wasn't a great loss of life ( that we know of so far)

5. Just got power back late last night
here in Birmingham. Our street was the only one in a large neighborhood that was out! We were getting a little sweaty :) and lost everything in the fridge and freezer, but we just lost one big maple tree that was already sick. It could have been a lot worse.

You know what's strange? All over our neighborhood, the main trees that went down are the Bradford pears. You know, those funky round trees that bloom white in the spring? They must not stand up to the wind very well.

I'm so sad to see the pictures from Orange Beach. We've been staying in the same condo for 11 years. We choose it because it has a nice pool and big lawn area. I'm sure the condo is standing, but the pool and lawn are most certainly gone.

Has anyone heard about the old Gulf Shores Motel? My family actually stayed there once when I was about ten. It made it through Frederick, but I don't know about this time. The Sea and Suds restaurant is still standing, but it looks pretty rough. I haven't heard anything about the other landmark on the beach, the Pink Pony Pub.

My heart goes out to the folks who live down south. We had it easy up here.

We got hit hard in Andalusia. But we were okay in the long run.

7. Doing ok here in Mobile
I got my power back on two days after the storm came through. However, some people are still without power and part of the city looks like a war zone. Signs are gone everyone, billboards are torn up (some just collapsed), roofs missing here and there, and all kinds of trees down. We were lucky however.

Everything is pretty much getting back to normal, albeit very slowly.

8. Suffered through it.
I am in north Baldwin county. We made it through. No trees on house. Finally got our power back after about five days. Just finished cleaning up the yard this weekend. We faired a lot better than the the eastern and southern part of the county.
