I got to be curious about the residency requirements for political offices in Alabama because of the story about Charles Barkley wanting to run for governor one day.
I just looked it up and it seems really nuts.
To be governor, you have to have been a state resident for seven years. To be a state senator, you have to have been a resident one
day!
To be state treasurer, you have to have been a US citizen for seven years. To be a Supreme Court justice, it's just one day.
To be a member of a city council, you must 18, but to be a city
commissioner, you have to be 19. (And isn't that really about the same thing?)
You have to be licensed to practice law in Alabama, to be a district judge. But not to be a
probate judge.
It's kind of , if you ask me.
