Anything like this in other counties?

1. Hey
Do you have a link to something? I grew up in Baldwin County, my family still lives there. My brother has been trying to find a house, but the prices have skyrocketed around Daphne, and Spanish Fort. My mother's house is paid for, I would love to see what her property value is now. We moved in that house in 1973. She says houses in the neighborhood are selling before they can be listed.

My grandmother's house is waterfront on Mobile Bay. Luckily I think she is exempt from property taxes, she is 92.

Are the various tax hike precentages based on what area of the county you are in?

2. You can search tax records here:

Hardest hit (that I know about) are waterfront, or near waterfront, in south Baldwin.
Probably eastern shore too.

3. Yes, definitely Eastern Shore
I have two unimproved lots (no utilities, gulley frontage) that came down through my family in Fairhope. The appraisal doubled on each from '06 to'07. I'm fighting.

4. Good man! (Or woman?)
We need to SWAMP the revenue office, and I think we are.
And welcome to DU.
:hi:

5. Thank you...
... For the welcome. (For the record, native of Fairhope and an old hippie chick!)

Baldwin County has been good about adjusting appraisals on this land. No one actually goes and looks at the land, so I guess they assume it's prime real estate, ready for construction. The current situation, however, is another story: they've never doubled an already-inflated property appraisal in the past. I'm not the only one fighting; my entire family is on the warpath.

6. I've gone up about 40% in the last three years or so in Houston Co
But in fairness to our appraisers we were seriously undervalued before. I'm just above market value now. If we go up again next year, we'll fight it. I doubt that will happen. We've noticed the market here slowing in the last couple of months and prices are actually starting to slide a little especially on the higher end of the market.
