Ex-Illinois Governor's Conviction Upheld

By MIKE ROBINSON
The Associated Press
Tuesday, August 21, 2007; 9:25 PM

CHICAGO -- A federal appeals court upheld former Gov. George Ryan's racketeering and fraud conviction Tuesday, but he will be allowed to remain free on bond while his lawyers make a fresh appeal.

The 73-year-old former governor, once the state's most powerful Republican, had been under a court order to report to prison within 72 hours of the failure of his appeal.

But the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals relented and allowed him to remain free while his lawyers press their case for a rehearing before all 11 actively serving appeals judges.

1. Scott Horton was on Democracy Now today
He's from Harper's. He discussed the Siegelman case, and also touched on the wiretapping scandal, and the gutting of the Civil Rights division of the Department of Justice.

Transcript.

Listen.

Watch.

2. Scott Horton
He's either a Columbia law professor, or from Columbiana, Alabama.

I know he's a law professor, and I know he's from Alabama.

Maybe he's the Columbianan that became a Columbia law professor.

:D

3. The Mobile Press-Register's lead reporter on this...
...is their hot-shot investigative guy, a notorious local drunk. He also seems to have a racial chip on his shoulder as he was recently heard opining to colleagues about the discrimination facing white males. He reportedly said, "If we were black, we'd all be working for the New York Times."
