Alabama can be brought back to the Democrats, but it's going to take an effort by activists, with some money.

That dude has some serious cash. I didn't realize what the businessman he is until I looked him up on Wikipedia recently. Whoa, that guy is loaded!

I got a robocall from him a few years ago, campaigning for Siegelman, but I get the feeling that he's too busy hobnobbing with his society pals on Martha's Vineyard to remember his Alabama roots.

And I really hate to see Fred Schneider, of the B-52's, acting the same way. (He's from Georgia, though.) Vanity Fair magazine carries the occasional important article, but the worship of elitism within its pages never ceases to sicken me.

Something is seriously out of whack when the elitists are for Obama, and the rednecks still love Bush. I mean, it just doesn't make any sense.

I've lived (or have been trapped) in this state for most of my life and can say without much fear of contradiction that this state has the most stubbornly, stupidly hard-core conservative base of any in the country-- with the possible exceptions of states like Idaho and Utah.

Obama's people should probably just write off Alabama as a waste of time. Sure, he'll get the black vote, as Democrats usually do here, along with mine and a scattered and not that insignificant number of whites, but the split will come out about 60/40 McCain because of that rock-solid group. I mean, when was the last time a Demo won in a presidential election here? Has anybody since Roosevelt?

5. Do you have reps down there from O's national campaign headquarters?

The reason that I ask is that they have all sorts of great, really old-fashioned ideas about "getting the word out" including vans riding through neighborhoods with bullhorns, and we are conducting voter-registration drives all weekend long, every weekend--standing in shopping centers, going door-to-door in the projects, etc. Obama's website is a wonderful way for individuals to get involved. I signed on as a volunteer and answered questions about what I was willing to do and voila! There appeared on my screen a walking map with names, addresses, and voter ID of 20 of my neighbors, including the script to use going door-to-door, including responses to use based on their responses. Wish I could come down there and help you, but we have our hands full in NC!

I know there was one in Tuscaloosa. I think the others were in Huntsville, Birmingham and Montgomery. They shut down right after the February 5th primary.

I'm not aware of any campaign activity here right now, apart from a few scattered "meet-ups."

I seem to recall hearing of plans to open at least one campaign office, probably in Birmingham, but I don't know what became of those plans.

Hopefully, they don't consider us a lost cause. Personally, I just don't understand the disparity in the polls between Alabama and Mississippi. The last polls I saw had McCain up by something like 25 in Alabama, but only about 6 in Mississippi. I don't understand that at all. Mississippi does have a somewhat larger percentage of blacks, but not enough to explain such a huge difference. It's puzzling!

I have no doubt that Obama can win North Carolina. Good luck!
