Tuscaloosa News Endorses Kerry
*snip*

Although Bush lacked a popular mandate, he has pushed a hard course to the right, surrounding himself with ideologues like John Ashcroft. Making no effort to reach across party lines, he has only worsened the destructive partisan conflict in Washington.

Would Kerry, whose 20-year record in the Congress is decidedly lackluster, do better?

We think so.

The presidential debates, with their sharp focus on issues, revealed a man of intelligence and substance across the stage from an empty suit.

*snip*

Bush squandered his chances to become a unifying and effective leader at home and abroad. Kerry, we strongly believe, would make the best of his opportunities.

4. maybe
I know both the Birmingham News and the Birmingham Post-Herald endorsed Dubya. I don't know about the Huntsville, Montgomery or Mobile papers, although they all seem pretty far right to me.

5. nothing south of b'ham will endorse JK.
it's a damn shame, too. just by virtue of it's economic condition, alabama, mississippi and louisiana should be solidly blue. but people still believe race separates and defines their interests more than their socio-economic condition.

it's been years since i've lived in alabama but on my visits to my pop i can see that progress is stalled.

7. I don't think it's race
I think it's religion. I think a lot of religious people, even up to 20% of the African-American people, let themselves get sideswiped by issues like gay marriage and abortion. People need to focus on the real issues, imo.

12. the Montgomery paper has endorsed Kerry as well
This one shocked the hell out of me.

Kerry and Bush have one thing in common: They both are promising far more than the nation is likely to be able to pay for during the upcoming four years. But Kerry promises to pay as you go; Bush's record shows he is willing to build record deficits that will saddle our children and grandchildren with debt.

The choice for president on Nov. 2 is not an easy one, but because of his clear-eyed view of world realities and his domestic policies that hold greater promise of helping the poor and the middle class, the Montgomery Advertiser recommends John Kerry on Nov. 2.

6. Mobile Register endorsed Bush
no surprise there - doesn't the same company own the major papers in Birmingham, Huntsville and Mobile (they are all linked at AL.com, anyway)?

8. Dothan Eagle said this weekend that it won't endorse anyone.
Something about journalistic integrity. :P I didn't pay any attention to it because the paper is pretty ring wing.
