searching for normal people
Hi, my name is Melissa. I am originally from NY but moved to Muscle Shoals,AL a few years ago. (husband is from here) It has been hard to make friends around here without meeting some stupid people. I can't be friends with people I have nothing in common with, so it's been hard. I was wondering if there is anyone from the Muscle Shoals area who would be interested in making a new friend. I am 27, married one kid, liberal, and lonely!

1. I'm at the other end of the state, but...
You might try contacting the county Democratic chairman.

I know how you feel.
Baldwin county, where I live, usually votes 75% repug, 25% Dem.
Took us a while to find some like minded folks.
Good luck.

3. A Baldwin Countian!
trof, I'm from Fairhope, although I don't live in L.A. now. Wonder if we're acquainted? Have you been there long enough to remember Judge Roy Bean's?

Melissa, Muscle Shoals was at one time the coolest place in the state. It had a top-notch studio where the Stones and others recorded quite a few albums. A great many talented professional musicians came out of this town, although most are probably well beyond your age group. If you like music, you might give a listen to Pierce Pettis, a gifted folk singer and songwriter who's a native of MC.

4. Came here in '93.
I'm in Foley, on Wolf Bay.
Native of B'ham, but was out of state for about 25 years pursuing airline career.
I remember Judge Roy Bean's, but never went there.
I do stop by the Florabama once in a while.
:hi:

5. too bad people are far from me..
maybe I'll find someone sooner or later. I actually see some cars around my town with Obama stickers- like in a parking lot or something, and I want to go and like find the people! Is that weird? It sounds like I am an alien trying to find some more of "my own" lol. I hate AL!

6. 'Obama' stickers:
I actually found two new friends by leaving a note under the windshield wiper of cars with Obama stickers.
Name, and phone number and 'Call me'.
Worth a try.

That new bridge took 10 years or more to finish and it is there for an escape from Colbert County!

Just start hanging out with the kewl kids and faculty at the coffee shop at UNA and at Rivercity Coffee on Seminary right beside the old Shoals Theater. You could always start to go to church at Trinity Episcopal or the synagogue on Hawthorne, and there are buttloads of political volunteer opportunities. As hard as it is to believe, we are Democratic and nominally "progressive" here!

Now I know that all the commotion over at the Six Flags over Jesus aka First Baptist of M.S. may have you in a tizzy, but not many of us are triburapturists and W-ites. They are just louder.

Remember that Colbert, Lawrence, and Morgan Counties are where the smell and industrial blight issue-- it is so that we do not have to smell or see it in Limestone, Lauderdale or Madison. There is a reason I live 2 miles from Tennessee, by the way!

Look on the bright side - your husband could have dragged you off to Mississippi!

10. Liberal in Decatur
My wife and I live in Decatur. There are more progressive and liberal people living in Alabama than you think there are. Listen to your local NPR station, WQPR FM:88.7, and you will find out about happenings in north Alabama where you and your husband will meet like minded people.
