This is basically how I see Alabama politics. Do you agree?

Black Democrats = fiscally liberal, socially moderate.

White Democrats = conservative.

Republicans = psycho-crazy, knuckle-dragging Neanderthals.

I'm sure there are exceptions, but that's about how it looks to me.

Even though I'm very white, I'm pretty much onboard with the Black Democrats, though I wish they would lighten up on the gay issues.

...While they are more reasonable in their approach to the underclass and bear the clarity to see the deep racial motivations and chasm in the state's culture, my experience in covering politics tells me they are otherwise very conservative, hastened in no small part by their ultra-religiosity.

4. Qualification Missing?

"Their" ultra-religiosity? Who are "they"? Black Democrats? Because if that is what you mean, you need a qualification. Your "their" and "they" imply a characteristic that is common to all black Democrats.

That being said, I would have to agree; SOME black Democrats are quite socially conservative. Larry Langford tried to (or did) institute some sort of ridiculous "It's Prayer Time in Birmingham," or something to that effect. And, though I'm not sure if the new mayor of Birmingham, William Bell, is anti-gay marriage, he sure has some supporters who definitely are. Also, I have some family members who are very socially conservative; I have an "out" cousin who cannot and does not speak with his preacher dad. It seems that a great many of black Democrats here are fiscally liberal and socially conservative (I don't see moderate a lot...).

EDIT: Oh yeah, the Repugs here are as their nickname would suggest. I'm ashamed of Jeff Sessions and Richard Shelby.

5. I was playing by the rules set in the OP...

...The poster asked about very broad generalizations about some pretty big groups. On the average, the black Democrats I know and encounter are pretty religious and conservative in their own right.

I was really speaking of our legislators in Montgomery, not of voters or citizens in general. Though, I guess, my characterization wouldn't be much different anyway.
