Outrageous legislation; Or is it just me?
The state House passed the legislation described here on Thursday. Why isn't this getting more coverage? What are your thoughts?

Passed a bill that would allow law enforcement officers to serve a warrant or make an arrest without having to get the permission of a judge or magistrate in that county. Goes to Senate.

1. We don't need no stinkin' warrant.
Welcome to 1984.

I'm sorry to hear this.

Goodbye America, I loved you.

2. I hear you
The story about gay marriage I posted is getting a little attention, but this one seems a lot more significant to me.

Ya'll, is there some reason I shouldn't worry about this one? Warrantless searches and seizures and arrests? As much as I favor gay rights, isn't this one a lot more important in the grand scheme?

Maybe I'm missing something; and I'll be glad to hear it.

3. I think it's alarming.
Placing so much power & authority in one person's hands is never a good idea.

I'm surprised there wasn't more response, too.

4. Thanks for posting this.
I admit that I don't read the local newpaper daily as I used to and that I missed this. :( This is troubling!

5. even if you had read the paper, chances are you would have missed it
Just a tiny little thing in tiny little type, similar to the police blotter. I'd think this would be front-page news.

Normally, I would say this is unconstitutional. But I'm not sure such a concept exists anymore.

7. beats me
I've emailed a couple of newspaper guys asking for more coverage. That little chunk I posted is the extent of the coverage it's gotten, as far as I can tell.

9. It’s possible the bill is to amend current law so that a warrant issued
in one Alabama County may be executed in another Alabama county without getting approval by a judge or magistrate from the other county

Section 15-10-10, Code of Alabama 1975

QUOTE
Where warrant to be executed; endorsement when executed in different county.
A warrant of arrest shall be executed in the county in which it was issued, unless the defendant is in another county. When the defendant is in another county, it may be executed therein on a written endorsement on the warrant by a judge or magistrate of that county signed by him, to the following effect: "This warrant may be executed in __________ county."

10. apparently you are correct
I got an email back from one of those newspaper guys, and that's what he said it was. From the description in the paper, it sounded like the police would just be able to search and arrest on a whim. They should be more careful about stuff like that.

11. Isn't that, y'know, unconstitutional?
Who needs the 4th amendment anyway?
