Ocean Beauty Seafoods pays $11,000 for killing eagles.

"Ocean Beauty"? What an oxymoron. They must've changed their name since I lived in AK 10ish yrs ago. So, here's the outcome of the dead eagle issue. While I know individual employees who are really nice people, I must say I wasn't impressed by the company or its practices (was near them during the "lets bury the old asbestos laden stuff in the middle of the night so no one will notice and we don't have to pay to have it done right/you don't need hazmat equipment or even face masks employees!) debacle.

The Ocean Beauty Seafoods company of Seattle is giving $11,000 to bird rescue centers in Alaska as it expresses regret for the eagles killed and injured in a truckload of fish waste in Kodiak.

About 20 birds drowned in the slime or were crushed in the guts when they dived into the truck Friday at a processing plant. Rescuers saved 28 eagles. The company says the birds dived into the truck before it could be covered.

Ocean Beauty has donated $5,000 to the Bird Treatment and Learning Center in Anchorage and $2,000 each to three other raptor centers in Alaska.

Ocean Beauty has operated the Kodiak plant for more than 40 years, and says this is the first incident of substantial bird death.

1. It really was a sad situation

I don't know how they could have let that happen. One more bird died today here in Anchorage, but the others have been cleaned up and seem to be doing better.

Yea this does not surprise me at all... they had to pay 126,000$ in a settlement/penalty to settle discharge permit violations with the EPA at two facilities in 06. Looks as if they have cleaned up a little since then. After Tident backed out of the buy out.. hmmm wonder why....

Then the 50% buy out (50%??) from Bristol Bay (BBEDC). Who does a 50% buy out? There was a bit of a power struggle. It was a fight for who was going to de the president... and so on. I guess there is still a struggle with the power-thing...
