How good is the seafood in Alaska?
I imagine it's incredible. I'm going to be visiting for the first time next month, and then again this coming summer.

What's the best - the Salmon, the King Crab - any recommendations?

1. It's Incredible...
I went to Alaska for 10 days this past summer and I ate nothing but fish the whole time I was there. Salmon & Halibut - the king crab was insanely expensive for how much I'd enjoy it. I ate more "Halibut & Chips" baskets than I'd care to admit.

Mmmmm. Best seafood I've had anywhere.

2. You must go to the...
Moose's Tooth. It is a specialty pizza shop with a pizza that has none of that detestable tomato gunk on it, but rather Alfredo sauce as the base. It is topped with Tanner and King crab meat and they have a wide variety of mushrooms (exotic types, try the Japanese, I forget the name, but not shitaki). You must also visit the Sourdough Mining Company for their beef ribs, very best I have ever had, and across the parking lot, you will find the world's largest chocolate waterfall (20feet high) inside the confection/souvenir store. Third, tehre is a little diner (forget the name, but it is easy to find) just off Muldoon near the university. Their breakfast special is Reindeer sausage and Halibut nuggets with eggs. All of these places are in Anchorage. You won't be disappointed.

3. Where are you going to visit?
It is not the best time of year for seafood though I bet you will find some. The fisheries are mostly shut down for the winter. Longlining closes the middle of this month and that is for halibut and cod and rockfish. The salmon industry is pretty much closed for the year but you may find some fresh king salmon in Southeast Alaska. They are allowed to fish "winter kings" there but no where else in Alaska. Shellfish is pretty much available year round. Clams are an easy one and crabs are fairly plentiful. Welcome and hope you enjoy your visit. I had fresh scallops and shrimp just last night. :-)

4. The halibut is very very good
Edited on Fri Nov-05-04 01:37 PM by Ihatewannabetexans
If I were you, I would go to New Sagaya (a smal market here in town) and buy a a fresh halibut filet, then pick up a small propane tanke and burner and some fish batter and make my own halibut and chips. The fresh stuff is so much better than the fish that has been frozen.

Either that or give me a call if you want and I have some vacuum sealed halibut and we can have a moose roast to boot.

5. Was there this summer - Ketchikan
Damn good! I'm not a big Slm fan, but the Halibut and D crab was amazing!

We caught a bunch of sharks too, poor sharks...of course we let them go, but very embarrassing for a shark
