ANCHORAGE, Alaska-- One of the defendants in the Department of Justice's ongoing corruption probe in to Alaska politics was sentenced Wednesday morning.
Former Alaskan Bill Weimar was sentenced to six months in jail, followed by six months of home confinement for illegally donating $20,000 to a state candidate's campaign in 2004, and expecting Legislative favors in return. He also received a $75,000 fine.
Judge John D. Sedwick called Weimar's case a serious offense.
"It is the kind of offense that does great damage to the community. It allows for the corruption of the public process that we all really depend on," the judge said.
On Wednesday, Weimar called his actions a "criminal thinking error."
"I paid it and that was wrong. I should have known better," Weimar said in court.
Weimar pleaded guilty in August to two felony counts: conspiracy, and structuring a financial transaction relating to an illegal campaign conrtibution and working to hide it from public view.
