Former AK gov. Jay Hammond, father of the Permanent Fund,

has passed away in his sleep at the age of 83, one of a very small handful of Republican politicians I admired and respected for his honesty, integrity and good heart. Rest in peace, Governor.

1. He became governor when I lived there as a kid.

I believe I met him personally. I was only 13 or so. Good guy.

We had two TV channels and the network shows came 3 months late because the tapes had to be flown up from the Lower 48. Cable and HBO were "pipe dreams" for us. I left in 1977.

A Republican who cared deeply about conservation.. A Republican who truly wanted (D) Fran Ulmer to become our next Governor.

Nope.. we'll never see a more bipartisian Republican like him again.

left '92 to return to the road system and rant at people who talk about their acre as "the homestead". I have a couple friends left in Juneau too.
