Central AZ Water Conservation District candidates
I did some digging on the candidates running for the above and came up empty, so I called the local chapter of the Sierra Club. I just got off the phone with Sandy Barr, who informed me that the Sierra Club is not endorsing any of the candidates because they couldn't find any concrete information about the candidates either. She said she hopes to send questionnaires to candidates in the future.

Rather than leave this section blank and open to tampering by creative conservatives, I am writing in candidates as I have done for other offices where no Democrat is running. Michael Moore's name appears as a write-in candidate for multiple offices on my ballot. I will write his name in as a water district candidate as well, along with the likes of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Robert Redford, Al Franken, and Jane Fonda.

1. I know one *not* to vote for
..because his signs are all over that trailer that's parked next to I-17 going north out of Phoenix that usually has murals promoting Repuke candidates painted on it.

I forget the name but he's the one with "protect our water" on his signs.

I have to admit I don't like the idea of writing in candidates unless it's an uncontested race with only a Repuke running. Surely there are some good candidates running and there are ways of finding out - if the Sierra Club didn't know maybe you could stop by your local Dem Party headquarters and ask? If anyone does this, post what you find. I have the info on the nonpartisan judicial races posted in another thread, if anyone needs to know how to vote in that race.

2. I called my district HQ and they couldn't help either.
I'm trying to contact someone at Dem HQ to see if they know. If I get any information from them I'll post it here.

I prefer to cast a vote for a viable candidate also, and use the write-ins only as a last resort. If there isn't a viable candidate, I use writing in a name is a way of preventing someone from voting for me, and also to decrease the percent of the total vote going to the named candidates since write-ins are tallied in the "other" column.

Thanks for your input. :-)

12. Another candidate to NOT vote for
Sid Wilson has been a registered Republican for 47 years, according to his bio on AZ Central.com:
http://www.azcentral.com/news/election/questionnaire2010/capboard.php?action=ViewAns&canname=swilson

Something voters might want to take into consideration......

13. Five More Candidates NOT to vote for
I dug around on AZ Central candidate bios a bit more, and found that the following candidates are all Republicans: Sid Wilson, Andy Yates, Tim Bray, Karl Kohlhoff, Mark Lewis, and Cynthia Moulton.

Frank Fairbanks and Brian Munson are Independents.

Jim Holway and Arif Kazmi are Democrats, as we already know.

I couldn't find bios on the remaining candidates...

Hope this info helps!

15. I found more info on candidates
Again... looking at the 'other side' will give you some useful information on candidates:

http://sonoranalliance.com/2010/10/19/voting-on-the-central-arizona-water-conservation-district-candidates/

"Mark Lewis is a conservative Republican State Committeeman from LD 8. Small, limited constitutional government is the goal."
"TC Bundy is a Reagan Conservative... wants lower taxes with good and effective governance for CAP."
"Raymond Johnson is a Conservative ... Conserve water, conserve money, less taxing & less government."
"John Rosado started the South Peoria Tea party and is also running for the Peoria School Board."
"Cynthia M Moulton believes in small government lower taxes conservatism with efficient and honest government..."

Same list posted on http://www.bulletpeople.com/2010/10/10/tea-party-candidates-in-central-az-water-consrv-dist-water-conservation-district/

Quotes above were taken directly from the website: Sonoranalliance. It looks like the bulk of our voting opportunities for CAWCD are not going to be democrats. Good luck at the polls. I think I will be utilizing the write in as well.

16. Info on Ray Jones
I found a site with information on Ray Jones.

http://www.azcentral.com/news/election/questionnaire2010/capboard.php?action=ViewAns&canname=rjones

For what its worth, his party registration is listed as N/A – nonpartisan office.
There is extensive bio information and many relevant essay question/answers.

As a transplant to AZ, I don't pretend to understand the full impact of water to this state. I would welcome a more knowledgable analysis of Ray Jones essay answers. Is he blowing smoke or does he seem to understand the relevant issues???

3. Found a couple good ones
Jim Holway and Arif Kazmi both seem to be good libs. I found some info on them at the bottom of the West Valley Democrats page:

http://westdems.com/index.php?option=com_candidateinfo&Itemid=16

Now to find the next best three...

17. I admit it -- I'm really reaching here
Ok... caveat emptor (sp?) ...

I admit that I don't have any good, clearcut answers to add to the above recommendations...
HOWEVER...

http://www.glendalestar.com/opinion/letters_to_the_editor/article_73221690-e142-11df-8d63-001cc4c002e0.html

the above article acknowledges the T-partay's desire to take over the CAWCD for a fiscal slash-n-burn and suggests some alternatives. I will list their recommendations below for reader convenience, but I recommend that you do more research. I'm still on the fence about whether to vote for the lessor evil or just write in Elvis. I am leaning toward the lessor evil because I have heard the battle cry to mobilize the T-partay and fear 'stupidity in large numbers'.

Quoted from above article:
Highly Recommended:
Frank Fairbanks. Retired Phoenix City Manager. Registered Independent. Endorsed by Arizona Republic.
David S. "Sid" Wilson. Retired General Manager of the CAWCD. Republican. Also endorsed by Arizona Republic.
Tim Bray. Currently incumbent board member. Water consultant, primarily to major developers and cities. Republican. Endorsed by Arizona Republic.
Jim Holway. Formerly Assistant Director of the Arizona Department of Water Resources. After leaving ADWR, worked at ASU in the Global Institute of Sustainability. Now at the Sonoran Institute, which is a moderate environmental organization. Democrat. Endorsed by Arizona Republic.
Ray Jones. Water Consultant, primarily to private water companies. Formerly president of Arizona American Water. Republican.

Also recommended:
These are also totally solid candidates and would be fine board members.
Karl Kohloff. Retired water management professional. Republican.
Arif Kazmi. Civil Engineer who works for ADOT. Registered Professional Engineer. Democrat. Endorsed by Arizona Republic.
Andy Yates. Worked at the Arizona Capitol Museum. Now has his own PR/Consulting business. Republican.
Brian Munson. Works for mining company ASARCO. Formerly Director of Water Quality at the Arizona Department of Water Resources. Independent.

Please take this vote seriously. The CAWCD is local, efficient, non-partisan government at its best, and it's really at risk this year.

5. Here is how I decided
Edited on Fri Oct-15-10 06:45 PM by SargeUNN
I googled each name minus the ones that were listed here as teabaggers, and chose the ones that seem the most reasonable. I would say who I voted for but I have sealed the ballot and forget exactly, however the 2 listed here I voted for and the other 2 I chose according to profiles mostly at Azcentral.com and whatever else I could find on them.

7. Here is who I think I voted for
I have sealed my ballot so I am going to try and recall from a list.
For sure I voted for:
Jim Holway
Arif Kazmi
Ray Jones
and I think I voted for:
Frank Fairbanks
if I voted for a 5th one I don't remember who it was.

10. Write In's
Thank You for the suggestions I will do just that - however since a couple of them are no longer with us may I suggest writing in Silver Days, I did that for the County Attorney where there was no DEM running, and I will do it on the Central AZ Water CNSRV DIST.
