TEMPE - Arizona State University officials say that there are good reasons that the school ranks high in serious crimes among the nation's public universities.
According to the FBI's latest unified crime report, ASU's main campus is No. 1 among universities in violent crimes for 2003-04.
School spokesman Manny Romero said the nearness of ASU to the popular bars and clubs on Mill Avenue brings to the campus many people who can cause problems. He also said the hundreds of thousands of people who come to football games at the university's stadium also hike the crime number.
Romero said the school's Department of Public Safety reported 38 violent crimes, including assault, rape and armed robbery, in 2003-04. No murders were reported last year; there was one the previous year. That's up from 34 violent crimes in 2002-03, he said.
