Mass Rally Jan. 12th State Capital
***MASS RALLY PLANNED - Wednesday, January 12th 12:30pm
Arizona State Capitol - Downtown Phoenix

Dear AHRF Members, Friends and Allies,

As expected, next week members of the Arizona legislature will introduce devisive legislation to not only ban same-sex marriage but also to ban civil unions, domestic partnerships and any other form of legal recognition of same-sex couples.

This legislation will also prevent the state, cities or counties from extending any legal benefits to domestic partners (including straight partners). In other words, the current domestic partner benefits (e.x., medical benefits) offered by the cities of Phoenix, Tempe, Scottsdale, Tucson and Pima County will be NULL and VOID. Additionallly the Domestic Partner Registry of Tucson will be NULL and VOID.

This is unacceptable.

NOW is the time to express your opinion.

We strongly urge you to do the following:

COME to our RALLY on Wednesday, January 12th, 12:30pm Arizona State Capitol - Downtown Phoenix Bring your children, Bring your friends, Bring your neighbors, Bring your signs. WE NEED YOU to show the real faces of LGBT families

CALL your legislator - Tell them you are their constituent and you vote.

TALK to your friends families and co-workers - People are more likely to support legal benefits for LGBT people if they know someone personally.

This legislation is simply a blatent attack on LGBT people, LGBT families and LGBT children.

We must do everything we can to stop it.

That means we must SPEAK UP and SPEAK OUT

TALKING POINTS

* A constitutional amendment is WRONG. The state already bans same-sex marriage through DOMA
* Our policy makers are playing politics with our lives
* Taking away your legal and medical benefits hurts you and your children
* Assuming all the rights and responsibilities that come with committment is beneficial to the state

Don't be afraid and Don't give up.

We can make a difference.

2. POSTPONED
ACTION ALERT
***RALLY POSTPONED***

***Wednesday Jan 12th Rally POSTPONED***

Dear AHRF Members, Friends and Allies,

We asked you to mobilize and you responded.

Because of your emails, your phone calls and your letters, the Government Accountability and Reform Committee of the Arizona Senate has cancelled its hearing scheduled Wednesday on the proposed constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage, civil unions and domestic partner benefits.

We had scheduled our rally on Wednesday to show our community's opposition to this bill. Since the hearing was cancelled, we are postponing our rally.

THIS IS A GOOD THING

HOWEVER, this is not the end.

We fully expect this bill or another one like it to be scheduled again soon. Once we know the date of that hearing we will call on your help again.

In the meantime, we strongly encourage you to continue doing the following:

CALL your legislator - Tell them you are their constituent and you vote.

WRITE a letter to the editor of your local newspaper

TALK to your friends families and co-workers - People are more likely to support legal benefits for LGBT people if they know someone personally.

TALKING POINTS

* A constitutional amendment is UNNECCESSARY
* The state already bans same-sex marriage through DOMA, and the Arizona Supreme Court has already ruled that same-sex marriage is not constitutionally protected
* Our policy makers are playing politics with our lives and love
* Writing discrimination into the Constitution is wrong
* Discriminatory laws and policies that create second-class status for LGBT people lay the foundation for hate crimes and violence to occur
* It is *always* wrong to put basic rights for marginalized communities up for a popular vote
* Assuming all the rights and responsibilities that come with commitment is beneficial to the state
