Guns-in-bars bill advances

PHOENIX - Rejecting pleas from the tourism industry, the House Judiciary Committee voted Thursday to let customers carry guns into bars and restaurants that serve alcohol.

The 6-3 vote also came over objections from people who own and operate establishments that would be affected, as well as police, prosecutors and neighborhood groups.

All told lawmakers they should not tinker with existing laws that prohibit weapons anywhere alcohol is consumed.

Thursday's vote sends Senate Bill 1363, which already passed the Senate, to the House floor.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
PHOENIX - A legislator said Wednesday he killed his own bill on weapons misconduct, saying it went too far by providing broad exemptions that could bar state prosecution of people carrying guns into schools and other prohibited sites for protection.

Rep. Doug Quelland, R-Phoenix, pronounced his bill (HB2666) dead one day after it received preliminary approval by the House.

"I'm trying to save as much face as possible," Quelland said as he explained to reporters his decision to stop consideration of the bill.

I thought the original author of this bill withdrew it? What happened? Who re-introduced the bill?

I'm just thinking about all the stupid, stupid things I've done after a night at the bar.

4. We should set up webcams in the bars and sell subscriptions.

5. This HAS to qualify for the Conservative Idiots of the Week......
maybe it already was before, but I don't remember it. Yeah, there's nothing that will make our Taverns safer than the right of every drunken fool to keep and bear arms.
This will make Phoenix the tourist mecca it's always dreamed of being. There's nothing like taking the kids on a vacation to a REAL wild west town, where the lawless settle their own drunken disputes with the draw of a six shooter! :eyes:

6. How does one nominate for 'Idiots of the Week'?
Most of the bars that I frequent here also serve food but after the kitchen closes, all that's left is drinking.

another snip from the article:

Rep. Steve Yarbrough, R-Chandler, who voted for the bill, said he may seek to narrow its scope so that patrons would be able to carry guns only into restaurants but not into establishments licensed as bars. The difference is the amount of food they sell.

He is not convinced a no-drinking rule for gun-toting patrons would work. "I rather doubt that anybody is going in there for the popcorn and the pretzels," he said.

Any effort to limit the bill will get a fight from the National Rifle Association. NRA lobbyist Darren LaSorte said business owners would remain free to keep their establishments gun-free. All they would have to do is post a sign by the door.

The bill spells out that those who have a weapon are prohibited from drinking, he added.

8. I think this is the same bill.
If you read through these links, it looks like it's the same bill the author killed earlier in the month.

9. I've looked through the links again, and now I'm not so sure.
I haven't seen anything yet that is dated after the date the author is supposed to have killed the bill. I have no clue what is going on. Why is it so difficult to figure these things out?

Seems as tho this one is a Senate Bill not a House Bill like the one that was discussed earlier this month.

On edit: Thanks for the link.

11. How does this Senate bill become a House bill?
Edited on Thu Mar-31-05 11:29 AM by No Surrender
Will it have the same number prefixed by "HB?" I'm really not knowledgeable about how things work in the AZ legislature.

en edit - what still is not clear to me is whether the house version of the Senate bill that passed will be a resurrected version of HB2666.

12. I'm not sure either but.......
it looks like the Senate Bill was introduced b4 the House one. So when the author of the House Bill withdrew that bill, he knew there was already a bill in the Senate on the same subject. Then made a statement his bill was 'over the top' so it makes him look like he wants to protect citizens from the guns/alcohol mix.

Oh, the bills have different #'s, BTW.
