1. Plant Natives!
Edited on Sun May-15-05 04:25 PM by Botany
No perennial flower all summer ......
plant so as their bloom time is staggered .....
However most desert flowers bloom Feb. to early April
and after rain storms.

5. HEAT TOLERANT SUMMER ANNUALS
HEAT TOLERANT SUMMER ANNUALS
Summer is upon us. Having already experienced upper 90-degree temperatures in June, many of our colorful spring annuals have diminished in vigor and beauty. But plant materials are available that will provide the color we desire and tolerate our almost intolerable East Texas summer heat.

Here are some suggestions to replace stressed and faded plant materials in your landscape:

Moss Rose (Portulaca) - Perhaps the most heat and drought tolerant bedding plant available.

Texas Bluebells (Lisianthus) - A native Texas plant.

Zinnias -Very colorful, easy to direct seed.

Periwinkle (Vinca) - Just about the best summer annual available.

Lantana - Can be grown as a perennial in East Texas.

Impatiens - One of the few annuals that will do well in shade and still tolerate the heat.

These are just a few suggestions. Check with your local nursery for other heat tolerant annuals to put some color in your landscape for the summer.

6. I have seen many 'rock gardens' down here...
many have lantana planted in them. Portulaca is good too, but they do require more water than lantana. Most flowering annuals just require too much water to be cost efficient.

7. The Cooperative Extension Service is tremendously helpful
in this regard--and usually so bored they are thrilled to help!

Look to the Government Blue Pages, also try a Google.

9. vinca and purple lantana!
Edited on Tue Jun-07-05 07:11 PM by pirhana
Both do real well all summer.
And the lantana grows like crazy.
Water everyday, but just enough water, not too much.

Zinnia's do really well for me if planted by seed, in the ground only, not in a pot.
After they sprout, only water the roots. The leaves get dry and brittle if they get wet. But who cares? The flowers are beautiful, and they re-seed themselves and bloom all summer. But plant soon. We are lucky to have this decent weather in June. I picked up some seeds yesterday at Target! They had a whole bunch of seeds inside by where the patio furniture is.

Let me know how these work for you.
