Poll on Pederson-Kyl race
As a non-AZ resident I believe many Senate seats are in play, and we have an outisde shot at regaining control. But I've been very hesitant to believe we can actually win in Arizona. This was until I saw some polling on a potential Kyl-Pederson race today. Kyl leads 44-29, which isn't bad this far out. But a closer look at the race makes it even better. 44% for a term incumbent isn't good, also only 57% of registered Democrats have thrown there support behind Pederson, and Pederson already has a lead among independents. To me this suggests this definetely has the potential to be a competitive race.

3. Kyl is not McCain
McCain has great personal appeal and has that independent streak that plays well in Arizona. Kyl is a doctrinaire conservative, and hopefully the tide will be against those types next fall.

If Pederson pours his fortune into the race, he has a shot. This is the guy who spent two million bucks to refurbish the state Democratic Party and get Napolitano elected. My only hesitation is that Pederson does not cut much of a charismatic figure -- he's a slightly pudgy shopping center developer -- but since Kyl has no charisma at all, I suppose that isn't going to be a defining factor.

I will say this: Pederson is no dummy. If he runs, he'll run a smart campaign.

8. Kyl is also a major league Bushbot and we MUST use this against him.
Every photo-op, every dinner invitation, every Bush-gift vote must be exploited by Kyl's opponent.

We need to give the substantial moderate vote in AZ a reason to vote against an incumbent--linking Kyl inextricably to Bush should help immensely.

I believe this is winnable, but it wil be quite a fight.

2. Arizona Democrats
To get an idea of how sad it was here - they did not run anyone against Kyl in 2000.

5. that thought still bugs me
a bunch of Republicans that were elected in 94 were knocked out in 00, and Kyl, who fitted in that group, would have been a much easier target then.

Fuck.

But really, this just goes to show how much good Pederson has done for the state party-- going from not running anyone in 00 to recruiting two top-notch candidates (Napolitano & Goddard) in 02 and then making them win in a "Republican" year.

I just hope we can get someone like Pederson to lead the party now. Mitchell might sound good on paper, but to be honest, he's got his Senate duties to still attend to, and doing that 60+ hour/week job and holding down the Chairmanship-- which isn't paid (don't let anyone tell you we're the party of the rich)-- could probably stretch anyone's abilities pretty far.

9. I know from someone who worked (paid, eve) in the state offices last
year that there is a commitment to having a Democrat running for EVERY office.

Said person was close to Pederson, so I think they do have that commitment.

This is a huge issue for me as a longtime AZ Dem voter. I've had no opportunities for a Dem vote in far too many races.
