Great Turnout in Phoenix for Today's Protest! (Dial-Up Warning)
The four corners of 24th Street and Camelback were completely full of anti-war and anti-Bush protesters this afternoon. What a great turnout! I'm not very good at estimating numbers, but I'd guess there were somewhere between 800 and 1,000 protesters. Code Pink had a tent set up and Billionaires for Bush had their tuxes and "Corporations are people, too" signs. We started with the rally, then walked by Senator Kyle's office and read the names of the AZ soldiers who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan. We finished with a candlelight memorial. :patriot:

The support from the people driving by was TREMENDOUS! Every time the street light changed, the drivers would honk and flash us peace signs! There were NO counter-protesters and no problems with the police.

1. Great pics thank you my northern neighbors from Tucson here!
I was just curious I see this guy wearing this "Democratic Underground" shirt.

Is that like some sort of commie run website or something? :7

3. thanks for the pix!
Great pix! Great rally! Did anyone else think there were a few less single-digit salutes? We need to keep the pressure on and the momentum going!

4. I thought it was amazing how many people honked
as they drove by. It didn't stop during the entire rally. I stood out on the curb for about 2 1/2 hours and maybe 25 people did the thumbs down or single-digit ("you're #1" ;)) salute.

7. I was there too
The energy of the crowd was incredible and the overwhelming support from the cars passing by was heartening to witness. Yes, there were a few middle fingers and a few thumbs down - those people were waaaaay in the minority. Actually, the saddest thing to me were the people who didn't react at all - it is hard to believe, but I guess there are some who are so uninformed as to have no opinion at all.

16. I'm sorry too
funny thing is, I saw the guy holding the "make levees not war" sign and my attention was all on the sign and I missed the fact that he was wearing a DU shirt! D'oh!

I was with several friends and my partner. One of my friends was the guy carrying the "think outside the box" sign, which was a box on a pole with the word think on another extension above it.

17. I remember the sign and your friend.
At first I just saw the box and I asked my husband what the box meant. LOL. He pointed up to the "Think outside" part.

9. The East Valley Tribune interviewed
Edited on Sun Sep-25-05 12:35 PM by lady lib
my hubby (the pinko wearing the DU shirt) and identified him as a Republican! (He said he used to be a Republican. Past tense, guys.) This is why I don't talk to reporters. They also misquoted him and seriously low-balled the estimated number of attendees, but never mind. ((Toss hands up in the air))

13. It's not serious enough for a letter, more amusing than anything.
Edited on Sun Sep-25-05 05:06 PM by lady lib
On a positive note, the paper included a picture of two of the better signs at the rally:
"Hey Bush, you're doing a heck of a lousy job" with an Alfred E. Newman picture of Bush, and the other sign "Jesus is the Prince of Peace, Bush is a Prince of War and Death"
The top part of that second sign was cut off in the photo, but I'm pretty sure that's what it said.

Of course, one of my computer-literate kids (the youngest) had to help me upload them to a hosting site before I could post them. :)
