1. What are we going to do now?
I heard that she was going to do this from listening to 1010 (sigh)
but I didn't know that it was already a done deal.

Wtf are we suppose to do?
Last year I ordered a mail in ballot, but dropped it off on election day.
Put it into a box, who knows if it ever got counted.

I am worried. Those assholes are probably going to do something to get Janet out of office. That is the only way they will be able to do it. I heard that her chances of re-election are over 60%.

I feel helpless!
Any ideas on what we can do? Protesting is not going to change anything.

4. my email to Jan Brewer
I see your office has contracted to purchase $11M worth of Diebold voting machines in spite of the numerous problems with their equipment.

Arizona voters deserve better than a voting system that is riddled with glitches and has been de-certified in several states due to a lack of verifiable votes and security risks.

I sincerely hope you will reconsider this contract and strive for a system that insures the voters of Arizona a paper trail and verifiable votes.

8. Protesters disrupt Brewer's Announcement...
No "beating around the bush" by these folks:

Activists upstage Jan Brewer at re-election announcement

Casey Newton
The Arizona Republic
Jan. 6, 2006 12:00 AM

Secretary of State Jan Brewer announced her bid for re-election Thursday over the shouts of sign-waving protesters who said the voting machines Brewer favors are unreliable.

What had been planned as a simple announcement on the Capitol lawn quickly turned chaotic, as a handful of agitators managed to upstage the first-term Republican and her legion of supporters with criticism of the state's use of Diebold Election Systems machines.
...
http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/local/articles/0106brewer06.html

Brewer referred to the protesters as "anarchists" and "conspiracy theorists." I don't think she'd know a real anarchist if they came up and bit her in the...(ahem). I read elsewhere that the McChesney brothers of the KXXT "M&M Show" were there. Those silly anarchists!

7. Nevermind, I got it here's my email
I understand that you have contracted with Diebold and have purchased hackable vote machines for use throughout Arizona elections. If you think Arizona voters are going to take this crap you are just wrong. Are you related to Catherine Harris or Blackwell? You have just joined their ranks as you well know. How does it feel to be despised as a democracy killer?

10. I wrote her before the last election. I got back what seemed to be
Edited on Sat Jan-07-06 01:10 PM by Humor_In_Cuneiform
a form email that said they didn't have touch screen machines, only optical scan.

Blah blah blah.

Irrelevant. The tabulator is able to change thousands of votes at a time.

My question was how were they going to prevent hacking into the Diebold
Central Tabulator?

I had found a copy of the AZ SOS's manual on how to use the Diebold and ES&S tabulators.

I saved a copy.

I've so been hoping there would be a great Democratic candidate to oppose her.

Here's my saved copy uploaded:

11. We need to, if nobody is already doing so, look into the certification
process regarding the machines. Have they been certified.

See if we can do anything at that level re these machines, like other states (New Mexico, CA, and others) have done.

Ideas?

13. Here's one of the problem areas, there may be more:
I remember because there was a bill before the legislature that would not protect the paper ballots. I was disappointed that it wasn't vetoed by our Governor:

16-442

"16-442. Committee approval; adoption of vote tabulating equipment; experimental use; emergency

A. The secretary of state shall appoint a committee of three persons, to consist of a member of the engineering college at one of the universities, a member of the state bar of Arizona and one person familiar with voting processes in the state, no more than two of whom shall be of the same political party, who shall investigate and test the various types of vote recording or tabulating machines or devices which may be used under this article. They shall submit their recommendations to the secretary of state who shall make final adoption of the type or types, make or makes, model or models to be certified for use in this state. The committee shall serve without compensation.

B. On completion of acquisition of machines or devices that comply with the help America vote act of 2002 (P.L. 107-252), machines or devices used at any election for federal, state or county offices may only be certified for use in this state and may only be used in this state if they comply with the help America vote act of 2002 and if those machines or devices have been tested and approved by a laboratory that is accredited pursuant to the help America vote act of 2002.

C. After consultation with the committee prescribed by subsection A, the secretary of state shall adopt standards that specify the criteria for loss of certification for equipment used at any election for federal, state or county offices and that was previously certified for use in this state. On loss of certification, machines or devices used at any election may not be used for any election for federal, state or county offices in this state unless recertified for use in this state.

D. The secretary of state may revoke the certification of any voting system or device for use in a federal, state or county election in this state or may prohibit for up to five years the purchase, lease or use of any voting system or device leased, installed or used by a person or firm in connection with a federal, state or county election in this state, or both, if either of the following occurs:

1. The person or firm installs, uses or permits the use of a voting system or device that is not certified for use or approved for experimental use in this state pursuant to this section.

2. The person or firm uses or includes hardware, firmware or software in a version that is not certified for use or approved for experimental use pursuant to this section in a certified voting system or device.

E. The governing body of a city or town or the board of directors of an agricultural improvement district may adopt for use in elections any kind of electronic voting system or vote tabulating device approved by the secretary of state, and thereupon the voting or marking device and vote tabulating equipment may be used at any or all elections for voting, recording and counting votes cast at election.

F. The secretary of state or the governing body may provide for the experimental use of a voting system or device without a final adoption thereof, and its use at the election is as valid as if the machines had been permanently adopted.

G. After consultation with the committee prescribed by subsection A, the secretary of state may approve for emergency use an upgrade or modification to a voting system or device that is certified for use in this state if the governing body establishes in an open meeting that the election cannot be conducted without the emergency certification.

Any such emergency certification shall be limited to no more than six months. At the conclusion of the certification period the voting system or device shall be decertified and unavailable for future use unless certified in accordance with this section. "

15. I wonder who was on the committee of 3 she had to appoint.
Edited on Sun Jan-08-06 07:10 PM by Humor_In_Cuneiform
Here's a link to one report by one committee she appointed, but it has 7 members:

http://azsos.gov/election/Brewer_Voting_Action_Plan/Election_Law_Advisory_Committee/Committee_Report_12-30-2005.pdf

Members:

Kevin Tyne, Deputy Secretary of State
Joseph Kanefield, State Election Director
Mitch Etter, Maricopa County Assistant Director of Elections
Patty Hansen, Coconino County Director of Elections
Lisa Hauser, Attorney at Law, Gammage & Burnham
Mary Jo Kief, City Clerk, City of Peoria
Dixie Mundy, Gila County Director of Elections

If this is the committee of 3, there was supposed to be an Engineering Professor from one of the state Universities. And no more than 2 of the 3 were supposed to be of the same party.
