Voter ID laws get tougher (Prop 200 ID requirements at polling place)
I hope the efforts here are genuine and the ID at the polling place will not lead to large scale disenfranchisement of AZ voters!!

With the March primary rapidly approaching, election officials across the state are scrambling to educate voters about the new identification requirements mandated by Proposition 200.

County recorders, election directors and city clerks are meeting regularly to create media campaigns that will outline what voters need to bring to the polls when they vote. Their goal is simple: Prevent voters from being disenfranchised.

Maricopa County this week hired Phoenix public relations firm Topete/Stonefield to develop a campaign that will tell voters what kinds of identification they need to bring to the polls March 14. The county is spending $20,000 to hire the firm and will spend thousands more on print, television and radio advertisements..."

Now for some background on Brewer's actions with regard to Prop 200 from AZ SOS's web page:

http://www.azsos.gov/election/Prop_200/poll_identification.htm

But not to worry the US Attorney General has pre cleared SOS's ID at polls procedure. Isn't that so reassuring? Same folks who brought us "legal" torture, and "legal" wiretaps.

(This is from the sos web site. Each of the dates below has a link to a press release by Jan Brewer.)

"On November 2, 2004, the voters passed into law Proposition 200, which requires voters who vote at the polls to present one form of identification that bears the name, address and photograph of the voter or two different forms of identification that bear the name and address of the elector before receiving a ballot.

Pursuant to A.R.S. § 16-452(A), Secretary of State Jan Brewer drafted rules to implement this identification at the polls requirement. In accordance with A.R.S. § 16-452(B), these rules were approved by the Attorney General and Governor on September 7, 2005, and was precleared by the United States Department of Justice on October 7, 2005.
