Minuteman PAC ads flaming Giffords
Edited on Thu Oct-05-06 07:13 AM by tyedyeto
I heard one on the radio yesterday on my way to work and thought ... WTF?

Did some research via google and came up with very little about the PAC. On their website, the only person mentioned as being a part of the PAC is 'Honorary Chairman' Chris Simcox, one of the founders of the Minutemen. Then I found this tidbit:

One of those is that of "Minuteman 2 Congress”, candidate Randy Graf in Arizona’s 8th district. The hand-picked Simcox candidate leads in the polls right now to run as the Republican candidate for the seat vacated by incumbent Jim Kolbe. Graf's ties to the minutemen go back to the groups inception over a year ago, when he was one of its initial members. Minutemen PAC has strongly supported Graf throughout his candidacy. From Graf’s website comes this:

Randy Graf is a Minuteman. He enthusiastically answered the call when the Minuteman project was formed in April 2005. He was there on the first day in Tombstone, Arizona where he lent a hand to the Project’s organizers in ensuring that registration and orientation went off successfully. He was a part of the month-long event on the border. And he was there as a featured speaker at the celebratory closing event of the Project.

Now is the time to take the Minuteman Project to the next level and it is time to send a Minuteman to Congress to represent American citizens who want something more done about illegal immigration and the lack of border security. The Minuteman Project can’t go on forever. We need to have the federal government take over and do the job that they are obligated to do.Randy Graf is ready and able, the target has been identified, and the goal is achievable. To do it, this Minuteman needs YOUR help and continuing support.

Is Graf a participating member of the PAC? Who are the other members of the PAC besides Simcox?

I also found this:

Three months after cleaning up his act, it was no longer Simcox's makeover that was drawing interest. Several former Minuteman comrades have gone public with charges that Simcox has not been accountable for the money the organization had raised. In addition -- and apparently unbeknownst to many of its members -- the organization has taken to calling itself "a project" of the Declaration Alliance, a group controlled by Black conservative Alan Keyes.

And despite his recent appearance with the Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly, where he assured the talk show host that everything was on the up-and-up financially, all is not well in the border-vigilante community.

Simcox has forged close political ties with a gaggle of conservative Christian organizations including Renew America, an organization that supports "the ‘Declarationist' ideals" of Keyes; Response Unlimited, Philip Zodhiates' direct mail outfit; Diener Consulting Inc., a public relations firm headed by Phil Sheldon, the son of the Rev. Louis P. Sheldon, the founder of the Traditional Values Coalition, and RightMarch.com, founded by William Greene, a protégé of direct mail guru Richard Viguerie.

Giffords lawyers are seeking to get the ads off the air:

In an effort to boost support for Republican congressional candidate Randy Graf, the Minuteman Political Action Committee launched the first in a series of ads on Tuesday.
The television advertising, appearing on cable stations, criticizes 8th District Democratic candidate Gabrielle Giffords as being "way too liberal for Arizona."
The Giffords campaign calls statements in the ad lies, and campaign officials are working with lawyers to have the commercial removed from the air.
