he was never that decent, just slightly less crazy than his GOP counterparts. People say he was a maverick, but it was mostly talk. He is just as anti-choice, anti-labor and anti-public programs as any Republican. He tried to differentiate himself from Bush for awhile, but then 9/11 happened, and he fell straight into line, and it's only been in the last year or so that he's barely stuck his neck out on some issue, like the nuclear option and his weak attempt at fighting Bush on the torture bill, both of which ended in a pro-Bush compromise.
And now he's been aligning himself with every right wing nutjob in the state, heartily endorsing the crazy race-baiting fascist in CD-8, and acting as though the "other Senator Jon" (Arizona has two Senators???) who's running for re-election has actually done something for Arizona besides relentlessly pursue the far-right agenda and helped tear down vital federal services that the rural areas (his base) need to survive.
so yeah. he's definitely posturing for the 2008 nomination, but his old age and the fact that he once wasn't in total lockstep with the right wing will work against him.
