Greetings! And great thanks for your continued and dedicated support!
As you know, we are quite pleased about the upcoming debate between Herb and
Shadegg, to be aired on Thursday evening's edition of Horizon on
KAET/Channel 8.
In our last e-mail, we invited you to a pre-debate rally on Tuesday evening
to show your support for Herb.
We now ask for your assistance in two additional ways:
* Write a letter to the Editor of the Arizona Republic, expressing
your dismay at the paper's endorsement (October 20) of Shadegg.
From the beginning of his campaign for Congress, Herb has been talking about
the key issues that affect all of us, Arizona, and our nation - clearly
defining the problems and offering practical solutions. In their endorsement
interview with the Republic's Editorial Board, the candidates discussed a
range of issues, including Iraq, immigration, earmarks, the Foley scandal,
etc. Herb immediately challenged the incumbent's ethical disconnect in
rushing to Dennis Hastert's defense and contending that a "stern warning"
was an adequate response to claims of pedophilia by one of his peers. Herb
challenged Shadegg on his failure to effectively represent the interests,
needs, and values of the citizens of the 3rd District. On each of the key
issues, Herb clearly and effectively differentiated himself from the
incumbent. On each of the key issues - in the humble judgment of Herb's
supporters - Shadegg was found wanting.
While we had no great expectations regarding the Republic's endorsement, we
were amazed that the editorial virtually ignored the issues and the
positions that differentiate the two candidates. It was remarkable, to say
the least, that the paper's rationale for endorsing the incumbent centered
on his being "a person of principles" while ignoring his lack of
accomplishments as a legislator and his reluctance to represent our
interests.
We think the Republic ought to hear from you. We urge you to express your
opinion.
* Call local media - TV, radio, and press - urging them to take note
of and cover Thursday's Paine v. Shadegg debate.
One of the great challenges of this campaign and our effort to get Herb's
message broadcast to a larger audience is the inclination of the media to
marginalize the District 3 contest. The media has yet to announce the
upcoming great debate between Paine and Shadegg.
We urge you to call local radio, TV, press, and even C-SPAN, and strongly
encourage their coverage of the debate.
Finally, if you want to see first-hand the contrast between Herb and the
incumbent, go to Election News at

3/KTVK's "It's Your Time."
