Given their long friendship, it should come as little surprise that Mayor Phil Gordon would endorse Sen. John McCain in his bid for the presidency.
But Gordon's quiet endorsement of McCain has raised eyebrows in the blogosphere: Why would Gordon, a Democrat, endorse the Republican McCain?
Similar questions were raised when Gordon endorsed Republicans Andrew Thomas (for Maricopa County attorney) and Joe Arpaio (for county sheriff).
"One has to ask," Democrat Ted Prezelski wrote in his blog, Rum, Romanism and Rebellion, "does he have Democratic friends?"
Yes, Gordon said this week, pointing to his endorsements of Democrats, including Gov. Janet Napolitano, Rep. Harry Mitchell and former Senate candidate Jim Pedersen.
"I'm a proud Democrat," Gordon said. "I'm supporting the senator. I disagree with him on a number of issues. I support him on a number of issues. It has nothing to do with other candidates. This is a close personal friend for years."
