Jeff Latas's son passed away
JESSE AUSTIN LATAS, 22,

Saturday, August 4, 2007 10:50 PM MDT

was laid to rest Friday, Aug. 3 at Southern Arizona Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Sierra Vista. He was buried with full military honors.

Latas’ burial was preceded by a memorial service at Adair Avalon Funeral Home in Oro Valley, where a slide show of his short life exemplified his happy and generous soul and his dedication to the United States.

Fulfilling his wish to become a soldier in 2003, Latas enlisted in the 208th Transportation Company with the U.S. Army Reserve. After completing his military training at Fort Jackson, S.C., and Fort Leonard Wood, Miss., he reported to Fort Bliss, Texas, in the summer of 2005 and was deployed to Camp Anaconda, Balad, Iraq.

While serving in Iraq, Latas suffered a relapse of childhood leukemia and was airlifted out. He received a cord blood transplant at University Medical Center in Tucson on March 31, 2006; he had been hospitalized there since May 19.
