U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords Endorses Sam George

Sam George, a good friend and supporter of both Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Gabrielle Giffords

My name is Sam George. Thanks to your help I am a candidate for Arizona Corporation Commission. I am running because a Democratic majority on the Corporation Commission is vital for keeping electricity rates down and expanding clean energy in Arizona. With your support, we have collected over 12, 000 signatures - nearly 3 times the requirement!

For 16 years, we have had a One Party rule over the Corporation Commission. The Republican Monopoly at the commission cannot regulate the special interest monopolies it oversees. Democrats must take back the Corporation Commission and make it accountable again to the people of Arizona.

The cost of One Party, Republican rule has been huge. Electrical rates have skyrocketed and Arizona remains at the bottom of the nation in terms of clean energy. Less than 2 percent of our electricity in Arizona comes from clean energy. The Republicans running in this election for Corporation Commission don't believe in global warming and want to repeal Arizona's Renewable Energy Standard.

Governor Napolitano is right: Arizona can be the "Persian Gulf of solar energy." An independent Corporation Commission led by Democrats will make that a reality. Solar power generated in Arizona can power the state and lead the nation to Energy Independence.

I have spent my last 18 years serving progressive and Democratic causes in Arizona and across the nation. In January of 1990, I was appointed Arizona's Deputy Secretary of State and served until 1994.

Since my term as Deputy Secretary of State, I have successfully campaigned on over two dozen ballot measures dealing with campaign reform, the environment, drug policy reform, and election reform, among other issues.

I am author of Arizona's Voter Protection Act that was approved in 1998. Before this, the Republicans at the Legislature refused to honor the will of the voters and overturned many initiatives -- despite overwhelming voter approval. Because of the Voter Protection Act, dozens of progressive initiatives dealing with health care, education, children, clean elections, etc. have been protected.

My writings on new energy polices for America have been published. I am co-author of the Great Divide. The book demonstrates how politicians from Red Republican states block energy reform in Washington. The conclusion is we must revolutionize our energy policies at the state level.

I am honored to have the endorsement of U.S. Representative Gabby Giffords of Tucson. There is no member of Congress who knows more and does more on solar energy than Representative Giffords. Southern Arizona is essential to a Democratic victory in 2008.

Together we can attain a Democratic majority on the Corporation Commission. Please return this email so that we can keep you informed and involved.

With my warm regards,
Sam George
Candidate for Arizona Corporation Commission
