Please vote NO on 105
vote "No" on Proposition 105, which will take away your ability to protect animals in Arizona.

Thanks to your help in 2006, Arizona voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition 204 by a landslide vote of 62 percent to 38 percent to provide more humane treatment of farm animals. This common-sense measure requires industrial factory farms in Arizona to phase out the cruel confinement of calves and pigs in small cages where they don’t even have enough room to turn around and stretch their limbs.

However, this initiative could not have passed if Proposition 105, deceptively called the “Majority Rules” initiative, had been in place.

If Prop 105 passes in November, any future ballot initiative would need more than just a majority of votes cast, but a majority of all registered voters -- regardless of whether people show up to the polls or not. People who choose not to vote or simply don’t make it to the polls, should not be considered automatic "No" votes.

Prop 105 is a cynical and underhanded power grab by special interest groups and industry lobbyists who want to prevent Arizona voters from exercising their rights to direct democracy. It is a de facto ban on the ballot initiative process, and will take away the rights of Arizona voters to protect animals through the initiative process.

Protect your voting rights by voting "No" on Proposition 105 in November. And please be sure to share this message with your friends and family in Arizona.

Thank you for all you do for animals.

Sincerely,

Mike Markarian
Executive Vice President
The Humane Society of the United States

1. 105 is a bad idea but it really has nothing to do with 204
and by the way there is only one hog confinement operation in the state and I believe only one dairy doing veal calves so 204 was and easy feel good measure that really didn't have much impact on anything.

2. Prop 105 would effectively gut the entire ballot initiative process
The proponents claim it's about tax increases but the language says it will apply to any initiative that causes any expense to anybody. That means that an initiative to say, extend the voter registration deadline, would have to get the majority of qualified electors to vote for it because there would be some expense entailed in that. Likewise any initiative that might cost individuals or businesses the slightest bit of money, no matter how worthwhile it was, would be subject to it. Meanwhile, the state lege would still be free to introduce any ballot resolution it wanted because Prop 105 only applies to citizen's initiatives.

3. I voted no on grounds I did not understand it
And I think most people will probably do the same.

I sent in my mail in ballot and spent some times on the props and voted NO on almost all of them.

4. I voted no
I think the "no on 105" campaign should have called it unpatriotic to vote yes.
