Question about the machines

Do the voting machines that we feed our ballots into count the votes? Or do they just count how many ballots have been put into the machine?

1. I'm pretty sure they tabulate the votes.

but only count the ballots on the "cash register" slip that is coming out the top

2. Interesting

Because when my son fed his ballot back into the machine for the second time it did show a different number which would indicate another ballot counted. So if they tally the votes, then does that mean all of his votes, except for the corporation commission which he was told would not count, would be counted twice? Did he just vote twice for president?
