Blame the Universities
Laurie Roberts of the Ariz. Republic wrote her frustrations about the cost of a university education yesterday, and she is correct that the Ariz. Constitution does state that;

The university and all other state educational institutions shall be open to students of both sexes, and the instruction furnished shall be as nearly free as possible.

- Article 11 Section 6, Arizona Constitution

Although Laurie is correct in demanding that the state’s universities follow the law, she places the blame on the universities, not the Ariz. Legislature, which is responsible for the funding of said universities. But she did mention it;

ASU says it can’t be helped, what with the nausea-inducing drop in state funding. ASU honchos say they’ve already absorbed a $50 million permanent hit, with $40 million in temporary cuts that included employee furloughs of up to 15 days…

Laurie fails to identify it’s the Republican dominated state government that decided to eviscerate the university’s funding, forcing the hand of Michael Crow and the Board of Regents to raise ASU tuition 32%, (which by the way I will have to pay this semester being a transfer student) to save 1200 needed jobs. Laurie goes on to complain that paying for “out-of-state” scholars is a waste of money for her son’s education, sure get rid of them Laurie, and watch the quality of your son’s education diminish faster than a ice cube in the heat, then let him loose into the real world to get laughed at for his joke degree from a lower tier university. These out-of-state scholars are some of the most brilliant minds in America, they have proven themselves to the world of education and are sharing their knowledge with your son, you should be glad that they move to a state with a government and citizenry with such a hostile view towards education. Also out-of-state? xenophobic much? Laurie before you go wasting paper assailing the straw-man, maybe you should find out who put him in the garden.

The sooner Arizona citizens decided that education is more important than $12 a month the better. What the people need to discover is that this is the time to fund education, the west is rising to become the center of power for the United States, and if Arizona does not fund it’s education systems properly Arizona will become the socio-economic equivalent of Appalachia for the new west. We need to get these weasels out of office before they cost Arizona the future it truly deserves.

1. Oh Jeez
I didn't realize you were talking about Laurie Roberts - the biggest f**ing waste of newsprint Arizona has ever seen. She's a smarmy holier-than-thou idiot who thinks she's not only perfect but has all the answers. Every lecture/scold (oops, article) she writes has the same irritating tone. I can't stomach reading her and am impressed that you can.
