The New Yorker Profiles Sheriff Joe
http://immigrationimpact.com/2009/07/22/new-yorker-profile-of-joe-arpaio-is-not-a-pretty-picture/

The July 20th issue of The New Yorker paints a detailed portrait of Sheriff Joe Arpaio,,,,,and it is not a pretty picture. The profile of “Sheriff Joe” that emerges from the story by journalist William Finnegan is that of a man obsessed with publicity and self-promotion, who has a deep streak of sadism and little regard for the U.S. Constitution, civil rights, actual crime-fighting, or protecting the safety of the public he ostensibly serves.

Sure, but who ya gonna believe? Our own good ol' Sheriff Joe and his supporters, or some elitist, northeastern, liberal rag with a reputation for so-called "integrity" and factual, unbiased, in-depth, investigative reporting?

1. 200 deputies involved in a roundup in the SE Valley
and they net 36 "illegals." I doubt they're hard core criminals but most likely the guys who trim trees and work hard for a living.

Sheriff Joe is a racist fraud. But you knew that, didn't you?

3. I Wonder....
Is there anyone here at DU who's an Arpaio supporter? Related to one? Works with one? I'd just like to understand why, exactly, they vote for this guy. Now, if someone told me, "I vote for Joe Arpaio because he's a racist and a xenophobe, just like me", I would at least admire their honesty. But I doubt many of his supporters are that forthcoming or self-aware.

(I suppose I could save a lot of time by logging into skinheadsRus.com, or maybe bigots-n-boobs.org and asking around.....)

I'd have to disown a family member that worked for him.

2. Vile thug
The creep is an embarrassment to our state.
What disgusts me is that he's obviously grandstanding in a bid for elected office. Watch him go for Governor soon....and get elected. Shortly thereafter, booted back out of office when he does something so incredibly wrong that even the knuckleheads who voted for him notice the offense.

4. Well, I think he's got the tent city jail right...
...but not a lot else.

Hey, if it was good enough for me in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere (and believe me, there's no air conditioning the flightline on an Air Force base in Tucson or Pheonix or Vegas), then it's good enough for people who actually, you know, broke the law.

Convicted felons SHOULD be in tents, behind layers of barbed wire, minefields and snipers. No AC, winter or summer. Plenty of blankets and they can double or triple bunk. Hard labor making small rocks out of big rocks 10 hour/day, 3 hours of classroom time in what ever subjects they need (GED's) or want (College or vocational). Seems more than fair to me.

But yeah, he's also a blowhard camera hound...

Yeah, this is just what my non-violent, college-educated, father-of-two friend deserves for possessing a couple of joints.

But thanks for confirming what I've always suspected: That the majority of Arpaio supporters are closet bigots with shriveled souls.

God forgive you and GFY.

Well.

I don't think drugs should be illegal, as long as they don't get into the hands of children. Over 18? Do whatever the heck you want. This alone would clear nearly 50% of our prison population. I'm sorry about your friend. He did however, knowingly break the law, and thus made his own decisions. Don't like it? Get the laws changed. So yes, my sympathy is limited. If I broke a (stupid) law and got caught, that's the chance I took. It's an adult thing. For the record, I advocate drug legalization whenever I get the chance.

I'm NOT an Arpaio "supporter". I think some of his actions are correct, and many are wrong. It's not all sharply divided black and white you know. Also an adult thing.

Closet bigot. Close, but no cigar. I've lived in three nations other than the U.S. and visited a few dozen more. There are people I hate. Intentionaly stupid people. Willfully ignorant people. People who espouse equality and inclusion and human dignity with their words, but undermine these ideals with their actions. And I'm not at all in the closet about it.

Shriveled soul. Really? You don't even know me. I suspect you might actually like or at least respect me if we got to meet over coffee or lunch. Maybe not. But at least then you would have a better informed opinion. I guess the thousands of people I've helped airlift to safety during numerous natural and man-made disasters mean I have a shriveled soul. The thousands of tons of food and medical supplies I've helped deliver have shriveled my soul. The thousands of people I've helped medivac have shriveled my soul. The adopted sister I would defend with my life means I have a shriveled soul.

And yes, I think that convicted felons should be in jail, and I don't believe that jail should be a particularly comfortable place. It should be a place that makes you want to change your life so that you can get out and never have to come back. And it shouldn't cost more per person than keeping a college student in an Ivy League university. It should cost less than keeping a soldier, sailor, airman or marine in fighting trim under field conditions. Which means keeping them in similar levels of comfort. Tents and cots/bunkbeds and blankets. Too bad, so sad.

Do I think there are way too many "crimes" that fall under the 'Felony' label? You betchya. That, however, is a subject for another conversation.

Please note how it wasn't neccesary to devolve into profanity or personal attacks. I'll await your apology.

16. Ooops, I may have misunderstood...
Were you asking if I had spent time in Arpaio's Tent City? No I have not. I've never even had a speeding ticket. Been detained once or twice, but never arrested.

If you meant a military tent city facility, see my first response.

My apologies if I misunderstood you.

11. Please explain.
You don't think criminals should be punished? Or you don't think punishment should involve actual discomfort? I'm not trying to put words in your mouth, I honestly don't understand what you are trying to say.

13. Can you tell me...
...why a rapist or murderer deserves air conditioning, gym equipment other than a running yard and a pull-up bar, or television? Many lawful citizens don't get these.

Or anything other than the most basic, but balanced and nutritious foods? Should they have salt, pepper, sugar? Coffee, tea, soda? Many lawful citizens don't get these.

Can you tell my why criminals deserve anything other than a thin mattress and enough blankets to keep them healthy?

Where do you draw the line for the comfort level of convicted criminals? Shouldn't the conditions be such that the prisoners are eager to reform themselves and stay out of prison after their release? Instead of the revolving door system we seem to have now?

17. The Loss Of Their Freedom Isn't Punishment Enough?
I doubt you'll find many "rapists and murderers" in the Maricopa County Jail. They're usually shipped off to State or Federal Prisons. And rightly so. County jail is where we house deadbeat dads, DUI's, pot smokers, shoplifters and other petty offenders. But hey - a criminal's a Criminal, right? And they deserve not only to be locked away, but to be subjected to whatever "discomfort" their jailers choose to inflict upon them. Right, Heinrich?

Exposing prisoners to temperature extremes (like housing them in tents in the Arizona desert) is recognized as a form of "torture" under U.S. and international law. It creeps me out that you've been stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. No, I don't owe you any apologies. Your black or white, us against them, good guys vs. bad guys view of the world begs the question: What the hell are you doing at DU? Sorry to burst your bubble, but there's no such thing as a progressive sadist.

20. allo allo

So you remember the genealogy board, with its collection of bigoted Brits?

Well. Every once in a while somebody posts something about Sheriff Joe, and somebody else says how that's just the thing they need in Britain.

And of course, when I see that, I post links to, and excerpts from, reports of all the atrocities that have been committed by Sheriff Joe. Like
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Arpaio
for starters.

After reading that, the OP and others who had made approving noises in one such thread apologized publicly for what they had said.

Now there's an example someone could follow.

One of the truly appalling individuals at that place - a Brit who now lives in Arizona, actually - took to stalking me before she got banned. She was gonna have Homeland Security pick me up at the border if I tried to enter the US, and if that didn't work, she'd get Sheriff Joe to look after me ...
