Things to see near Scottsdale, Arizona

So this time next week I will be in y'alls lovely state. I'm going for my yearly checkup with my Mayo Clinic specialist who moved last year from Minnesota to Az. So this will be my first time there. I've left myself a couple of days with nothing scheduled to sight see. I'm kinda an outdoorsy type person interested in seeing the desert, mountains, wildlife (birding anyone?). Although I'll have a rental car, I'm not really up to a long drive by myself so I'm looking for stuff within an hour drive of Scottsdale, really.
I'll also bookmark suggestions as since I will now be traveling out there once a year, I can do stuff on another trip should I not have the time this year.
FWIW, I'll be there from Sunday afternoon till Early Thursday...

4. Marc Maron in Tempe

Marc Maron will be performing at Madcap Theaters on Mill Avenue (the former Harkins Centerpoint) on April 9-10. Shows will be at 8 & 10pm both nights.
