Background: Protesting Diamondbacks road games in order to punish owner Ken Kendrick for supposed (but not proven) donations to Republican lawmakers who passed SB1070 seems illogical. All that can do is take money out of the pockets of the home teams.
The All-Star Game is a different story. This is the big prize every anti-Arizona group has targeted, the lowest-hanging fruit. And it makes sense, because All-Star Games and all their trimmings (Fan Fest, Home Run Derby) are rewards to the home team ownership. Second, there have been whispers, almost since the day this bill surfaced, that the MLB Players Association, with its large Latino membership, would threaten some sort of action against the All-Star Game.
A few weeks ago, the union issued a non-specific statement condemning 1070 and coyly warning about possible future action. About the only explicit calls for a boycott we've seen came from White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen and Padres slugger Adrian Gonzalez.
The Diamondbacks brass has said it has received no indication the game is in danger of being moved.
