http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/opinions/articles/2011/04/23/20110423dupnik-grijalva-valdez.htmlTUCSON - At a time when the GOP has a monopoly on power in state government,
plainspoken Democrats like Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik and U.S. Rep.
Raúl Grijalva give Arizona some needed perspective.
Dupnik, an early critic of Arizona's "Papers, please" immigration law, SB 1070,
got slammed because of what he said after U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot
Jan. 8. Six people were killed and 13 were wounded that day.
At the time, the sheriff said: "When you look at unbalanced people, how they
respond to the vitriol that comes out of certain mouths about tearing down the
government. The anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is
getting to be outrageous." He added that Arizona has "become the mecca for
prejudice and bigotry."
Condemnation was swift: Ironically, much of the criticism came from north of the
Gila River, where Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has made three-ring stunts
his trademark. During Dupnik's 32 years as sheriff, he earned a reputation closer
to Marshal Matt Dillon than P.T. Barnum.
