four scorpions! Since we moved here we have captured four Scorpions

My wife killed two, I let two go. Not bad for eight months in Tucson! And these are the bad little tree bark poisonous motherfuckers. We didn't have these in San Jose! All we had was black widow spiders.

1. Inside or outside?

Might not be a bad idea to pick up a blacklight for $20 at Home Depot. (They have the 18" florescent fixture with a bulb and cord for that price, if I remember right.) Turn off the other lights and turn on the blacklight and the scorpions will glow in the dark; makes it easy to check for them. There may even be cordless ones now - I've never looked.

If you've done any research online, you've probably seen the advice to clean up brush, wood piles, etc.

I've seen a few black widows, but only in the attic. Well, there was one dead in my garage, but it was the day I got the keys to my brand new house back in 2000. No idea where that one came from... I didn't even have dust in the house yet! :)

2. They were all inside and yeah, after the first one we bought a little blacklight flashlight

When I caught the third one we shined the light on it and they do indeed make a cool blacklight show.

I still don't shake my boots out in the morning like in those old jungle movies but I'm guessing one sting will take care of that.

3. I've Lived In Tucson For 38 Years......

...and I've never even SEEN a scorpion (or a rattler for that matter) outside the Desert Museum. (Did once spot a huge tarantula sunning itself by the side of the road...)

I have a regular visit from one every late summer on my back porch. I'm sure she'll be back again soon. She hangs out for a week or two and disappears for another year.

Just one scorp in the house in 17 years in Sedona.

7. And I'm loving it! The Saguaro Natl forest is literally a 9 iron from my driveway

So far, we've seen a number of coyote, had a big tarantula visit, seen a baby Bobcat and some really cool birds, not to mention the Scorpions. I've also gone on some short hikes in the forest and seen the biggest Jackrabbits in the whole world. It has been too hot for any extended hikes just now (hike?/pool? Pool? hike? I choose pool!) but when it cools off a little, I intend to do some serious exploring.

9. More scorpion stings reported as temperatures rise

PHOENIX – With the hot weather, Banner Good Samaritan Poison and Drug Information Center is seeing an increase in scorpion stings.

They've had more than 70 phone calls within the last 24 hours from people looking for medical advice after being stung by the critters.

It seems as the mercury rises so do the number of scorpions and it's Ben Holland’s job with Scorpion Sweepers to go out and hunt them down with his ultra violet light.

“We're finding a lot of scorpions. They are all over the place this year, much higher than last year,” says Holland. “On a good night we'll get 10 to 15 on a slower night 3 to 5.”

Scorpions are nocturnal but love the heat so these triple-digit temperatures in the dark can definitely bring the creepy crawlers out creating an additional danger.

“We find them on the walls, under potted plants, in their potted plants. They're all over the place under trash cans,” says Holland.
